Mr. J, M. Mitchell wai presented
with two sweet potatoes, yesterday,
that show ,' what "comes out of the
ground, Id size, in this section. Miss
Ethel Banks of Grantsboro, and Miss
Ethel Smith of Riverdale, were the
donors and the potatoes weighed 4 lbs,
2 oz, and 4 lbs 8 oi,
- A movement is on foot to have a boat
race off East Front street on next
Wednesday or Thursday. There are a
number of fast power boats in this port
and a free for all race with small
prize to the winner, would prove to be
an attractive feature of the week's fes
tivities. It is to be hoped that tho
event can be arranged. ' ', "
James Lof tin, the negro man who
appeared in Bridgeton last Sunday af
ternoon in a bedraggled condition and
told the people of that place he had
been knocked off the railroad bridge by
a passing train, and who a short while
afterwards was taken ill. has been car-j
ried to Stewart's sanitarium. The ne
gro's mind seems to badly affected and
unless he improves mentally he will be
sent to the colored asylum at Goldsboro,
A number of race horses were being
tried out by their owners yesterday out
at the aviation field preparatory1 to the
races to be held there this week. Sev
eral of the horses 'showed excellent
speed and there is not the least doubt
but that racing will be one of the most
. popular events of the week, ' j
There is. perhaps, more country pro
duce shipped from Maysvilleto this city
than from any other nearby town. Last
Thursday night Collins & Gillett, a
leading firm of merchants of that place
shipped almost a solid carload by ex
press there were three thousand pounds,
of poultry, turkeys, chickens and fresh
meat, to New Bern. Can any other
place beat it? '
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Novem
ber 28(1 and 29th, the Craven County
Sunday School Convention will meet in
this city at Centenary Methodist
Church. At this convention there will
be a large number of prominent Sunday
School workers and it is hoped that
every teacher in the county who can
do so will be in attendance. . Ample ac
comodations will be sceured for all who
attend. .'. .'..'.;.-,' . ' j
The writer has been spending several
days in Maysville, and that section, and
was greatly pleased to note the won
derful progress being made in farming
operations and business affairs. It
would take a column or two., to tell of
the improvements made in Maysville,
Belgrade and up White Oak river,;
Abundant prosperity seems to be the
rule and there is absolutely no one in
want. A more happy, contented, pros
perous people cannot be found within
Carolina's borders, and may their hap
piness and prosperity continue, i ,i
The Elmwood Camp, W. 0. W, will
go to Maysville this morning to assist
the local camp at that place, in unveil
ioir a monument to the late Clvde Mat-
1 tocks. Mr. Mattocks, a most excellent
young man, a christian, loved by all
who knew bim, it will be remembered,
' was stricken down Just upon the three-1
hold of manhood. The writer was permit
ted to view the monument. It is a hand
some shaft of beautiful white marble,
fashioned in the shape of a tree of the
forest' whose branches and top had been
kipped, typifying the young life that
was rudely cut off ere it hsd reached its
prime.
The Jumbo sweet potato, not a four
. or five, or even a seven pounder, but a
jfreat big potato weighing ten pound,
' was brought to New Bern last night by
Mr. George E. Weeks, of Maysville, to
, be placed on the agricultural exhibit,
Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. Weeka
is cashier of the Maysville Banking and
i Trust Cor an astute banker, but a farm
er as well. He owns a place about three
miles from Msysville, where this huge
tuber was grown, and it doesn t owe
its tremendoas size to any special cul
tivation, the fertility of the sod did
the work. An enclosure of ' about one
quarter of an acre, in which cows were
penned last year was broken for the
first time, this summer, and planted to
sweet potatoes of the babama variety.
Behold the result! ' 1

Jones County's Gains Since Constrnct
" - ion ot Railroads In it;
Trenton, N. C, Nov. 16, 1911.
Editor Journal: .
' For many years, after the Civil war
Jones county made very little gains. It
hss always been noted for its fertile
soil and fine agricultural section, but
not until after the construction of rail
roads in it, did the county show any
material gains. It therefore, might be
interesting to many of its people to
know, something of its past and present
condition.'
The year prior to the construction of
the Wilmington and New Bern railroad
through it, the total value of , all its
real estate and personal property was
1715,000. Its present value atone of its
railroad, telegraph and telephone prop,
erty is now more than $552,000. This
new value in railroad, telegraph, etc.,
is some seventy-five per cent of its to
tal value before their construction. The
net income of this new railroad proper
ty to the county for taxes is now more
than $4,000. The total value of all the
property of the county is now in round
figures, about $3,000,000. Pollocksville
township alone being more than $1,000,
000, which is about $300,000 more than
the worth of the whole county before
the construction of its railroads. The
county is practically out of debt. , The
amall sum it owes is easily taken care
of.
The time has now arrived when our
people need and require additional rail
road facilities. We want an East and
West railroad through the county con
necting every part of the county with
each other section. The present com
mercial and agricultural interests re
quire it We have three good banks,
one each at Trenton, Pollocksville and
Maysville, all doing good business.
Trenton needs a railroad, we never can
reach that point of thrift and prosperi
ty which we are en tit led to until we can
secure railroad facilities. We have been
aiscussing tne project or building a
railroad from Swansboro to Maysville,
Pollocksville and Trenton, and thence
onward for a western connection eith
er at Kioston or Fayetteville. Our
county can easily subscribe $50,000 of
its county bonds to this enterprise. We
are perfectly able to do it. In fact the
additional railroad .properly could easi
ly take care of a $100,000 of its county
bonds and our people would never feel
it The people generally seem to favor
this idea. We believe they are ready
and willing to begin a more substantial
and forward movement to develop along
the industrial, financial and commercial
lines. Our schools, ehuri hes and agri
cultural Interests are prospering. ' Let
us add to them aid build up and offer
inducement to hold our own population
at home,
