Naw Bern, N. C June. R 1912. , WE CANNOT WIN IF It takesa Southern newspaper ta sound the lugubrious note. whenever Congressman Under wood is thought of as a possible Democratic presidential nominee. Why to' it that the Democratic part; of the South, casting a great . vote at every presidential election, always meekly accepts a candidate from some other section T What is the answer t Because the South is known to be true to Democracy, while one, two or more, states north, east or west, are 'doubtful,' and need some political office, in order to vote for the Democratic nominee. The fact that there have been Democrats with courage in the South, who have advocated and taken a determined stand for a Southerner for President is tbe most encouraging sign of the po litical times. These Democrats have had to face all the discour agement from those of their own MfiAn It Wa Mnnnfc win 1 f HVV.W... Ft W U U V V WW , " - has been the cry of men and news papers only in the South, when the Aiabamian was mentioned. The South is bold in announcing its great natural resources and in viting the world to come and help build up its territory. The South ern Democrat is hold, except when the presidency is suggested for one of his citizens. Then comes up the excuse, "not time just now." When will be the time f What time is better than the year when Democratic success was never so well assured f er . . a ( . a t . must me oouw wais ror aaouui ful political year, and then enjoy the privilege of naming a candi date to be slaughtered at the polls f Why cannot the Southern press at least let Mr. Underwood have an equal chance, that is not hamper him with adverse criticism, for should he receive a nomination there would have to be apologists from the South, for supporting his candidacy. TO COMMEMORATE - BEBNIANS. NEW . The recent unveilings in Raleigh of monuments to notable North Carolinians, new dead, has had a stimulating effect and aroused patriotic feelings among the peo ple. Both local and national his tory is best perpetoated through the visible sign, . monument or building, that records the dead to all coming generations, of the men and women who have stood for great thing, and thereby ao compllshd great good for state or nation, in their generation, ' which also has its enduring effect' for good upon future generations. . Capitol Square in Baleigh is be coming with each monument erec ted therein, a more valuable place for ever North Carolinian to visit, both for historical and patriotic reasons. It makes the Capitol City of North Carolina more noted in the eyes of outside visitors to this State, attracting them and impres sing upon them history, that every monument is certain to call parti cular attention to. LAST 0 Small Crowd at Court House to Hear -Report in Regard to Walker Road, Etc Tha meeting of the Chsm'er of Com merce held at tbe court house last night waa not largely attended despite the fact that It had been well advertised aud every one urged to at' end who had tha city 'a interest at heart. .. ,. At tha opening of the mreting sec retary Williams read the minutes of the last meeting after which President L. H. Cutler, Jr. stated that. Mr. J. S, Basnight' one of the eommittee ap pointed to inveatigate the Walker road waa present and ssid that he would make a vartal report of the committe s Findioy. N . Mr. Basnigbt stated that the com mittee was very much impressed with tha road. That it would only take about 300 to build this road and that if tha Chamber of Commerce would do nate a part of this amount that the re mainder wonld be raised by public sub scription. He further recommended that the road be built, that it would eut off several miles between this city and Anrora. y It was finally decided to ssk the coun ty commissioners to receive this road and put convicts to work on if and put it In condition, A committee of five was appointed to meet with the commiss ioners and talk this matter over and in the meantime get up a petition toward this end and present it ta the comrais. ioners at the next meeting. The secretary stated a coir.mittee had been appointed to confer with the owners of the street car line in regard to the kind of railjtbat wai being laid, but up to the preterit time "the com mittee had not been able to confer with tbe owners and that comquently notl ing bad been done. Mr. W, B. Blades stated that as one of the con mittee appointed to confer with the local reprtaentatives of the street rsilwsy Owners he was opposed to the kind of rail now being lain J and that if the local managers had the city's interest at heart the kind of rail now being laid would not be put down. He said that the citizens ' of New Bent were very much dissatisfied with this rail and at some future time the owners would be compelled to take this rail up replace it with a rail of a dif ferent type, . Mr, W, K. Baxter one of thek mem bers of the Board of Aldeimen, stated tyiat at tbe time tha f ramhise to this comreay wa. granted, ' five of tbe members voted against it not wanting to rush into the matter too hurriedly but that they were overuled. He futher stated that at a meeting held last right it waa decided to ask ttr. Sitierding the owner, to coma to New Bern and eonfer with the Board of Aldermen in regard to the matter. , The discussion among several of the gentlemen pn sent grew quite spirited and tha spirit of hainwny seemed to have departed.
