New Bern, If. C aa seooaaVehus sutter. New Bora, N. a June, 25. 1912. THE TAFT VICTOET AT CHI The victory of W. H. Taft over Theodore Roosevelt at Chicago was no surprise to the close student of politics. It was , presaged on the test vote for temporary chairman and each session of the convention following, made the end more cer tain, . . To those looking for -the spec tacular, the Chicago convention has been a disappointment. It was no epoch makiog period in the his tory of the Republican party. It was a prolonged convention, be cause of the acute antagonism up on which it entered, made long and dreary because the President's aide expected tumult and rough riderism, therefore a course was pursued, steady, sure and fatal to the Roosevelt side, aud this very undemonstrativeness of the Taft followers took the steam from their opponents, who lacked in the real enthusiasm for their candidate, that is so vital for success. The "steam roller" was too regular. It moved forward and each turn there was a crushing oat of some - Rooseveltian chance. Party organ -hatioa can-fee snrered . aty outside the convention but not even Roosevelt can face it unmoved in a convention. The very weakness of the Roosevelt delegates claims were too apparent when brought before the Republican committee, shaking the nerve of those who had attempted the bluff of forcing their recognition. The continuation of the Roose velt campaign tactics before and during part of the Chicago con vention, lost their force when con fronted by the Taft crowd in con trol 'of the convention. . Thief, fraud, bolt lost their effect, did not stir the Taft crowd to reply, and failed to arouse , any lasting enthusiasm in the Roosevelt fac tion,- Looking backward it is now apparent that the shadow of the convention ,.' . hall from . the first hoar had a weakening effect upon those who promised to make the ' convention an epoch making one la political annals, " 1 THE FORCE OF DIRECTION. The Horace Oreely advice given over CO years ago . 4Qo West, young man," would never have found such ready acceptance, ex cept for the tremendous efferts made by the transportation com panies to make going West, easy and cheap. After the reading of a resolution to this effect a number of the gent'emen present gave their ex periences in shipping by the Norfolk? Southern Railroad Company and which has been very unsatisfactory. , ; - Mr. L. D. Moore urged that, tbe Coast Line Railroad Company be asked to open up this route. That ha thought there was a sufficient amount of busii . ness to warrant them doing this. He also urged the Chamber of Commerce to offer them a location for a new ware house and to offer them some induce ment to build it at a more convenient point than at present ' - A committee composed of Messrs.
