In this issue appears the report of the condition of the Maysvitle Banking and Trust Co. Don't fail to read it. In this issue appears the report of the condition of the New Bern Bank ing & Trust Company. It is an unusu ally creditable report and you should not fail to read it. The wife of every farmer who comes to the city with her husband is extend ed a cordial invitation by the Woman's Club to visit the rest rooms recently fitted op by them in the new home of the Circulating Library on Middle St Mr. E. G. Hargett, a young man from Jones county has located in this city and will practice as Veterinarian. His office is 66 Broad Street. A Verin arian is greatly needed in New Bern, in fact in this section and no doubt Dr. Hargett Will meet with encouraging success., The Charlotte authorities are con templating securing the names of every person in that city who receives whis key by express or freight and also the quantity received and keep these re cords on file, ff the local authorities would adopt this plan they would doubt less be better able to got a line on many more of the "tigers" in thin city. In another column appears the an nual announcement of the Agricultural and Mechanical College. This College is doing a splendid work for the indus tries of the State. Its graduates are in demand at good salaries and are found in all walks of industrial life. Young men who desire to fit themselves for useful and remunerative service cannot do better than to inform them selves about this College. . News reached this city yesterday of the drowning of Mr. James Daniels, of Atlantic, and which occurred several days ago. Mr. Daniels and his brother bad been fhbing in Core Sound, and while returning home the victim of the accident decided to take a swim. Div ing from the boat he swam along with the vessel for some distance and then sank. His brother made, every effort to rescue him but failed in the attempt WRECK ON NOR-F0LO0UTHERN Tender Of Engine No. 1 Turns Turtle and Train Is Delayed For Several Hours. No One Injured. While speeding toward New Bern last evening enroute. from Norfolk, pas senger train No. 1 of the Norfolk Southern Railway Company was derail ed near Vanceboro, N. C, and was de layed for several hours. Jujt how the accident occurred could not be learned last night. The engineer on the train stated that the first he knew of the accident that the tenderof the engine was seen to have jumped the track. He quickly put on the emergency brake and brought the train to a standstill. But for this fact th loss of life would have been great a the train at the time was oyer a deep cut The train was due in New Bern shortly after 6 o'clock and it did not ar rive until about 9 o'clock. An examination for the position of Deputy Collector in the local Custom House was held in the U. S. court room yesterday before the local Board of Civil Service Examiners. Thrt e per sons took the examination. A stranger in town Monday, who had not been in town in 24 years. Hm busi ness here was hunting up a stolen watch, which, waa stolen by Frank Wil son, a negro from' Wilmington and sold to Nelson Clark. The stranger was Big Hill, of New Bern, he got his watch and went on his way rejoicing. Bay bo ro Sentinel. The National Democratic Convention will be held at Baltimore this week and that city will be the . mecca of thous ends of politicians. The New Bern de legates and others who will be on hand to witness and take part in the proceed iuga will leave this morning. Needle to say they all will be supplied with a roll of coin large enough to enable them to pay the Baltimore rates of $20 per day hotel bills. Anderson, S. C, June 24th. Six ne gro children, ranging in age from 4 to 16 years,' were burced to death early yesterday morning when their home in the country near Anderson, was de stroyed by fire. Eliza Hunter, mother of the children, was absent from home attending a church service. The doors of the house were left locked, but. the children could have es' caped through windows if they bad dis covered the fire soon enough. All of the bodies were completely turned. At the hearing three witnesses swore that thty bad purchas ed whiskey from, the defendant. The meat fast in this city has begun snd thousands of housekeepers have signified their inten tion to abstain from buying- meat by not making their daily purchases. ' An erroreous report was circulated last week that the butchers' and retail meat dealers snd the Federated House wives' Club had arranged a compromiie on the question of abstaining from meat for ten days. Bntchers declared that they welcome ten days of fasting by the public, for if such a move is successful, it will have a tendency to bring the price of meat to a lower leveL Th e, they say, they will be glad to see. . The officf rs of the Federated House wives' Club declare they wish to co-operate with the butchers in an effort to bring the price of meat to its proper level, but that nothing can be done un til, prices are lowered. , ' i ;;1' ' Consolidation of Schools Proposed.
