M. D. Wiley, the Pamlico county
commission merchant who was placed
under arrest at Columbia, N. C, last
Thursday on a warrant charging him
with living li. 1!. Hancock of Ottway,
Carteret county, a bogus check for one
hundred and six y-scven dollars, ap
pears to have been a victim of circum
stance:, over which he had not the least
control.
Deputy Mieiitt oljn H. Kussell rc-
, turned from Columbia yesterday af
ternoon, bringing with him Wiley
I The latter was at once taken before
! lustier of the Peace S. R. Street for
a preliminary hearing and so convinced
'was 'Squire Mreet that Mr. Wiley
was ii i' cent ..I any intention to vio
late T law that he disiiiVVl thi
action ..-!' !: Wiley had made good
il.eck and given his word
to secure the remainder as soon as
possible.
It seems that Mr. Wiley, upon an
order from a commission house which
he represented, purchased a quantity
of potatoes from .Mr. Hancock, giving
him a check tor one hundred and sixty
seven dollars. A few hours after the
potatoes had been shipped the market
price dropi id and the commission
house wired him to cancel the order.
At that time it was too late to do this
and the shipment went forward.
"The commission house was to have
wired the money for the potatoes to
the Beaufort bank and it this had been
done it would have saved Mr. Wiley
much trouble and embarrassment but
they failed to do this and when Mr.
Hancock presented his check for pay
ment it was turned dow n.
Acting Without giving the matter
due consideration, Mr. Hancock at
once came to New Bern and swore
out a warrant for Mr. Wiley's arrest
lhe matter is now straightened out
and Mr. Wiley has returned to his home
in Pamlico county for a few day's
vis't before going out on the road to
continue his business.
Mr. Kafer is an influential citizen and
tne action ot Mr, Keith in recom
mending him has the approval of the
majority of the citizens of New Bern
and it is the general opinion that he
could not have found a man more cap
able of holding the office.

TAKE PLENTY OF TIME TQ; EAT
There is a saying hat "rapid eating
is slow suicide." If you have formed
the habit of eating too rapidly you are
most likely suffering from indigestion or
constipation, which will result event
ually in serious illness unless corrected.
Digestion begins in the mouth. Food
should be thoroughly masticated and
insalivated. Then when you have a
fullness of the stomach or feel dull
and stupid after eating, take one of
Chamberlain's Tablets. Many severe
cases ot stomach, trouble and consti
pation have been cured by the use of
these tablets. They are easy to take
and most agreeable in effect. Sold by
