There la a say hut. much wiser ant' cheaper than It weeuis ut lirst glance, to the effect that "you won't get sick If you keep well." It Is a half jesting way of setting forth a profound truth. The risks and exposures of life are so many and so Insidious that they cannot be escaped. The only hope of passing through them unharmed Is to keep the body so strong and sound that It can defend Itself against the diseases which are constantly lying lu wait for the unguarded and the weak. It Is a mere commonplace to say that one man will take exactly the same course and face precisely the same risks that auother man finds fatal and eo entirely unscathed. Some times It Is a difference born In the two organisms, but often it Is the result of different living and different condi tions In respect to strength and health. If the body 13 maintained at a high state of efficiency and If care Is taken to overcome and correct the little dis orders and signs of trouble as soon as they appear there is not much danger of a serious Illness. The small pre cautions and the constant toning up of the body by exercise, fresh air, sen sible eating and drinking and absten tion from all excesses and follies ward off prolonged and often desperate struggles against disease. it Is the principle of the old adage, "A stitch m time saves nine." The same rule applies to the care of health. -Cleveland Leader. As a rule it takes less time to refrain from telling a man just what you think of him than it does to recover from the effects thereof. Effective Sunday, August 24th the Norfolk Southern Railroad will put into effect a new schedule for the night passenger trains between Raleigh and Norfolk. The change will shorten the running time between the two points approximately forty-five minutes. The most important feature of the new schedule will be that the train leaving Norfolk at 9 o'clock at night and also train leaving Raleigh at 9:30 p. m. for Norfolk will not have any freight cars in their make-up as has been the case heretofore. The night train from Norfolk will arrive 6:30 a. m. instead of 7:15 a. m. Passengers will be allowed to remain in sleeper until 7:30 a. m. so that they will not be inconvenienced. The night train to Norfolk will leave Raleigh at 9:30 instead of 9 o'clock as at present. The day train will arrive Raleigh at 7:45 p. m. The Railway officials consider the elimination of the freight cars from the night express the most important part of the improved schedule. Be ginning Sunday also the day trains between Raleigh and Norfolk will make a dinner stop of fifteen minutes at Edcnton instead of stopping only ten minutes there as now. As restaur ant is close to the station passengers will be enabled to enjoy a mid-day meal where now they have only time to snatch a sandwich. The first actor to personate Shake speare's lending characters was Rich ard Burbage. who was probably born in the same year with Shakespeare, and whose name stands next to that of Shakespeare in the licences for acting granted to the company at the Globe theater. In London, by James L in 1G03 Burbage was performing at the Globe theater on the night of June 29, 1613, when that edifice was burned. This was shortly after Shakespeare had given up the stage and "retired upon a competency to his native town of Stratford. It Is said that because of this disaster not one line of a drama by Shakespeare, In his handwriting or In the handwriting of that period, has been preserved. Burbage died March 16. 1618, two years after Shnkespeare, and bis death was the occasion for much more elegi ac effusion than bad followed the death of his great but modest friend. The poets, who had been under heavy ob ligations to the actor, felt -his loss se verely and gave him what post mortem payment they could. It Is said that Burbage was also a successful painter In oil. Oh, that he had given the Im mortal bard n sitting or two before his easel, but doubtless be painted for ready money, and It may be that Shakespeare was not a desirable pat ron of art! Burbage, like Shakespeare, was not unthrifty, and at his death left a land ed estnte that produced 300 a year, equivalent to about six times that amount today or almost $10,000 a year. Exchange. THE YELLOW HAMMER. And the Tie That Binds the Bird to the State of Alabama. It Is not generally known that the state bird of Alabama is the yellow hammer. In explanation of this fact the chairman of the fish and game commission of the state writes as fol lows: "As a matter of history it Is known that Confederate uniforms became scarce toward the end of the 'war; therefore lu order to provide the gal lant Confederates with proper clothing the good women picked the cotton, carded it Into rolls, spun them Into thread, wove It on borne made looms Into cloth, nnd then they were dis tressed to find that tbey did not have nor could they procure the dye with which to color the cloth they had made. They deliberated over this vexed question for many days, and finally an ingenious dame suggested that hickory bark be boiled and that the cloth be dipped Into the yellow water that would result from the boil ing process. "The happy thought was enthusi astically hailed, and tidings of the solu tion swept the state, and so all the uniforms were made of bright yellow cloth. The coats were made with long tails, and the soldiers that wore them, when they ran after the enemy, very much resembled the yellow hammer, the bird thut seems to dip through the air as gracefully as does the seagull sldm the waves of the opal ocean."' Birmingham Age-Herald. Castles of El Morro. There are two things about San Juan which are to bo found in almost every part of Spanish America where there are mountains or highlands. One Is the statue of Columbus; the other is the castle of El Morro. Most people of the United States are more familiar with Morro castle In Havana. When they hear there Is another Morro at Santiago In Cubs and then another In Porto Rico they wonder what It means. The explanation Is quite simple. These castles or citadels are located on pro jecting necks of high land which doml nate the harbor entrances. El Morro In Spanish simply means "the snout" Some of the plcturesqueness of the term seems to disappear when we speak of a snout of land, but It Is very goodteeogTapblonl terminology. Chris tian Herald. Birth of a Play. Mr. Frohmup Is said to possess the gift of seeing the germ of a play in the slightest Incident or sentence. An American journalist once wrote to him: "Dear Sir-Why couldn't a play be written round Curfew Snail Not Ring Tonight?" Mr. t'Vohman grasped the Idea and replied, "Excellent; come and see me" A few days later he received a wire saying: "Can't come. If used send $600."
