Just how near Hohn Brooks, colored, came to losing his life when he stepped backward from one of the New Bern Ghent Street Railway Company's cirs will probably never be known. Although he escaped with his life, Brooks was painfully hurt and was probably scared out of se- era! weeks' growth. The accident oecuered near C. J. McCarthy & Son's store and was witnessed by quite a number of people. In stpeping from the car Brooks in some way got his foot caught in the brakes and waa dragged along the track for a considerable distance before mot or man Praston HasseJ became aw wars of the fact that a tragedy was about to happen. Aa soon as Mr. Haasel discovered that his car waa dragging a man along the track, he threw .n the emergency brake and brought it to a atop and Brooks waa extricated from his peril ous f position. An examination of his injuries by a physician showed that they were not of a serious nature. M Tfiy fm sasas i traai aa y ClS?1imstiy WTWXaWX MAOBO z. " r nu u.
