TOltEL
Today Is Sweetheart Day
Norfolk, Sept. 4. Despondent ov
er prolonged ill health, Adolph E.
Seibert, manager of the Arcade thea
tre, ended his life at his home, Third
street and Brambleton avenue, Riv
erside, yesterday morning at 8:45
o'clock by shooting himself through
the temple with a .32 calibre Smith
and Wesson revolver. He was in
bed in a room up stairs when the
shot that ended his life was fired.
Mrs. Seibert was downstairs. Hearing
the explosion of the revolver, she ran
up to her husband's room, where she
found him dying. County Coroner J.
8. Carmine viewed the body and or
dered it prepared for burial.
Mr. Seibert had been in declining
health for several months. Last fall
he had fever, and never fully recovered
from the effects of it. While he had
been kept to his home for the most
of the time daring the past six months
on account of the condition of his
health, he had not seemed unduly de
spondent, although at times he seem
ed depressed. Mrs. Seibert said that
her husband's actions and manner
yesterday had not intimated to her
that he was planning to end his life.
His death came as a violent shook to
her.
Mr. Seibert was 47 years old. He
was a native of New York, but had
lived in Norfolk for the past 23 years.
' He was well known in this oity, and
had a large number of friends and
business associates. He had been man
ager of the Arcade theatre, on City
Hall avenue, for several years. Prior
to accepting the managership of this
theatre, Mr. Seibert was employed
with the Norfolk and Portsmouth
Traction Company. He is survived
by his wife, who was a daughter
of the late James D. Reed, and by
three brothers, Emil Seibert, Charles
Seibert and Oliver Seibert and a sis
ter, Mrs. Hannah Davis, of New
York. The funeral will occur Sun
day afternoon at the residence and
will be conduoted by Rev. F. G. Davis,
pastor of Brambleton Avenue Me
thodist church.

Interesting Contest IsTo
Be Held
Then
Among the very interesting fea
tures of the coming fair is the pro
spective Better Babies Contest. The
Anti-Tuberculosis Society is so glad
to take up this work; it is a movement
that has been productive of great
good throughout the United States.
North Carolina is one of the last
States to take it up, but in the last
two of three years, we are happy
to say, that in different sections of
the State, the fairs, both State and
county have inaugurated this de
partment creating great enthusiasm
and wide spread interest.
The Anti-Tuberculosis Society to
successfully launoh a Better Babies
Contest, will require the active co
operation of aL parents who care
for the welfare of their babies. So
we ask the parents to watch the pa
pers for future information regarding
the regulations of the Better Babies
Contest.

COMMISSIONERS
TO MEET MONDAY
The Board of Commisioners will
hold their regular monthly mo 't ing
at the Court House tomorrow and
there is lota of business to be trans
acted at this meeting. It is very
likely that some action will be taken
in regard to the improvements of the
roads in the oounty. The people
seem to be divided on the proposi
tion of spending in the neighborhood
of one hundred thousand dollars
for road improvements in the county.
The majority are in favor of improv
ing the roads, , but they are in favor
of thoroughly investigating the quali
ties of any material before it is pur
chased. ,
