BILLIE WOLTZ. and Concerning the Discontinuance of Sat urday Banking Hours. Yorkville. Enquirer. Of course there will be more or less grumbling at the action of the banks in discontinuing their practice of keeping open Saturday nights for the purpose of receiving deposits. The common dis position to object to change of any kind is natural, aiyl of course there are peo ple who are accommodated by the cus tom the banks have been following in keeping open Saturday nights. But the custom was a mistake from the begin ning in that it was a hardship on the clerical staffs of the banks and a great inconvenience generally. The banks now propose to remain open two hours beyond their usual time on Saturdays. This will give business people ample op portunity to deposit the bulk of the casli receipts during the day, and the arrange ment will be somewhat less burdensome on the bank people. The average busi ness man knows somewhat the routine of the bank folks and will fully approve the step they have taken in this matter. (By The Aasoeiated Pre.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 23. One great cause of the existing shortage in dwell ings, Senator Calder, republican, of New York, said in addressing the senate to day, is the high rate of federal income tax. This he declared was driving wealthy investors to place all their available- funds in tax exempt securities issued by municipalities, the states, and the national government, and he suggest ed that congress meet the situation by making mortgages on dwelling houses tax exempt to, a reasonable figure. "I am informed that the Marshall Field estate in Chicago and the Hetty Green estate, both of which formerly loaned heavily on real estate, find their incomes from this source to be less than two per cent -under taxation," Senator Calder said, "and they are diverting their capital funds to more lucrative in vestments. Tax exempt securities during the last five years have increased from $3,000,000,000 to over 14,000,000,000." Should Be Qvartined. Many physicians believe that anyone who has a bad cold should be complete ly isolated to prevent other memben jI the family and associates from eon tracting the disease, as eolds are about as catching as measles.
