Most people are familiar with the general idea of d ist ri 1 nit inn of risk, !ut comparatively few :iin'ar to realize its importune' in connection with invest ments. The majority of investors seem to lielieve that they have attainci pro per diversity simply ly the division of their sating among several different issues nf securities. A short time an" a review of the investment holdings of a verv sU'Ti'sc-ful business man, showed that over half of the large total of this investor's holdings was divided between seven different issues. (if those, two were railroad bonds, two were public util it v boii iN and three were industrial bond-. Each one of the individual secur ities Has of itself an excellent inves' metit. Upon i'Iiimt considcra! ion, how ever, it was seen that no nal diversity I.:. I been obtained. Importance of Diversity. The coal industry, of course, is nee of the mosit important in our 'oiiiiio n ial life, but HO lis of i n V et smeat s . ..11 be considered divc-Mfird when a!! nf ' companies repn sen'ed in tha' !' are idei.ti!ie,l I i so great an i A'ten vv''i any one industry or any one so ; n ..f the enantry. This, of eimrs", is a s mewha' ri 'remo example. It is remarkable, how ever, that many investors, nn n atter h uvv carefully they may select their se, nrit ies, absolutely ignore the factor "f diversify. T-'o many confine their purchases to some one class of investments; others, who re alize the danger of this practice, are content merely to subdivide their hold ings often without obtaining any real di versity. Investment securities are generally di vided into four principal classes; Gov ernment and Municipal, Railroad, Public Utility, and Industrial. For the pur pose of securing direriity, a slightly dif ferent method of classification may be made to advantage: Public Debts, the revenue for -which is derived from taxa tion; Regulated Private Enterprise, the basis of which is fixed rates. Private En terprises, the basis of which is individual incentive. In the lists given below no attempt has been made to inHude all the various industries and types of business; a com;cee classification would bo too long to be given here. I There is another form of diversity which, although important, ia seldom I givou consideration exrept by financial institutions. 'I hi is diversity u to mu-J luruy. i no raci mat. penosig or pros perity and depression follow each other in cycles is a mutter of common knowl edge. In the safe way, periods of high and low (that is, the rate of return nb tainable from investments) follow each other in cycles. Now if the investor has chosen securities, any considerable part of which happen to mature in npproxi match- the same periods, he may tind that be will be forced to do a considerable amount of reinvesting during a period of low investment rates. If he had I a ea refill to select, sccliri'ies With widely . an nig maturity dates, he would not be obliged to reinvest more than it .small percentage of his capital during any one period. To summarize, the ideal of diversity is to so arrange ymir investments that im nne ev. iii in any one ministry, m any one locality, nr any any one time can affect mor" than a small percentage nf your total holdings. ' classes of the people, until we are once more endowed with the old conception that u man in his work is, first of all, called upon to do his duty and then, after that, to look to hid rights. Of lato years we hare been proceeding on the reverse theory. We have been stretwiiig "our rights" to tho exclusion of the emphasis of "our duty" and the inevit able consequence has been that labor and capital both are concerned with the mere incidentals of their expenditures and 1heir activities. Even this condensed list shows the very wide vsn.ty of investments which it is possible to obtain. The investor hhould select his securities with a view to as wide a diversity of industry as possible and also a certain degree of geographical distribution. Care should be exercised to choose industries which not only ap pear to bo different but aro actually in dependent of each other. Under our present complicates! industrial structure, there is a great ileal of inter relation between the different lines of industry. Every business is, to some extent, de pendent upon other lines of business. For this reason, absolute diversity is an rnipossioniiy, out me new of choice is sufficiently wide to enable any investor to obtain a high degree of practical di versity. Foreign Securities. It needs to pu a premium again on tho currency of honest, labor -producing STvcat. We have gone a long way from the. conception of one's relation to, industry held by our fathers and held, also, by many of this generation a fev years ago, for present day iniquities are not altogether of the children. There has been so much industrial disturbance in the country -within these last few years that much of efficiency has been lost in industry. Glaring mistakes made both by capitalistic and labor leaders have jroduced a bad spirit in the hearts of both, and the result of it has been that labor has yielded a large amount of its fervor and enthusiasm. The need is to go back to Bethel in thi9 respect as well as in many another particular.
