C., Aug. :8.—More than twenty states of the Union are now growing soybeans, a crop which spread from a small beginning in eastern North Caro iina less than one-half a century ago. "In tp2<t." says C. B. Williams,* head of the department of Agronomy at State College, "more than two and one-haif mil !ion acres were devoted to the pro duction of this popuiar suntnter iegume crop. Most of this in crease has come about in the iast five or six years. The popularity of the soybean is due to its wide range of soil and climatic adapta tion; to its suitability in fitting in with various crop rotations; its reiative ease and cheapness of production; its wide range of use fulness for feeding purposes and its great vaiue in increasing the fertility of the soil." The soybean when rightly grow!) states Prof. Williams, is a Valuable crop in building up the the fertility of the soil. ft is doubtful if another crop can match the hearty favor and the rapid 'spread in growth and use which this crop has enjoyed in the fast few years. Farmers use the beat! largely for seed purposes, tor.hay production and for graz ing. North Carolina is still the great seed producing center. Over 4/ percent of the crop grown in this.state is sold for seed. Mr. Williams states that the cast of production is relatively low, usual ly running from $[.JO to $!.$<) when all costs are added. When the bean is grown in com or other crop:-, uh'-n the harvester C used, the cost is cut. Prof. Williams states also that n- farmers learn the value of the heat) for feeding to livestock, the product ton of seed wilt be lessen ed. There is still a surplus pro duced, however, and this cat) be used to depress prices unless a suitable market is found, t he market is to be had apparently in crushing the beans for oil. The i United State's consumes over 2$ million pounds of crude soybean oil per year and this will require the crushing of a little over one half million bushels to produce this oil. The amount crushed in the United States would provide an excellent outlet for the surplus seed. BRIEFLY TOLD School 'children of the United' Sues have more than $30,o<x).ofx) on deposit in savings hanks throughout the country, the hoys and girts of New England leading those of other sections. The average farmer gets vatue of about $440 in tiving expenses from fhs fann, according to data compiled by t)te Nebraska Agri cultural Cottege. Refrigeration experts predict that within the near future the same pipes that heat homes in winter witt he used to coot them !u summer. Otdy one person in four in Mexico is abte to read or write.
