Mr. Editor: I am persuaded that you and the rest of my fellow citizens would be delighted to know about my trip to New York. Wgll, I went all the way on the train. I took a sleeper at once, and the porter said I would have, to go up stairs. I suppose he in tended I should take an upper berth. However, I had an awful time. 1 was afraid the train mo tion would throw me out or run off the track, or something. And besides I couldn't tel! whether ! was coming or going. After that night I spent my time in the day coach, observing through* a window. The train went on and on, and all a sudden some fellow with a cap on called out "New Ork." I picked up my grip, knowing I had reached my destination. Soon the passengers began to file out. I went along with them, or I would have been lost. When I emerged from the sta tion, well, sir; I believe there were five hundred vehicles of every make. Every driver wanted me to get.in. 1 saw then that ! was very important. Well, I got in one of the things and the driver asked me where I was going. I said I was going with him. He says, "You don't understand, where do you want to stop?" I thought about a minute and said, "Broadway, please." 1 had heard of such a street. So he let me off. after paying him. It seemed to be a new world to me. Looking up at those sky scrapers reminded me of looking up treies for squirrels down home. Well, sir, 1 perambulated up and down Broadway trying to be dignified and important. 1 stumbled a few times apd ran in to a fellow who said. "What is the matter with you?."' 1 said, "I don't know. " He said, "I thought you didn't." 1 turned around to look back at tha.t fellow, and the people^ bumped into me. Some Some said. "Excuse meothers said, "Look out," and some smil ed. Well, it is getting late as the thousands of electric lights are on. By the way, they remind me of lightning bugs down home. It being body building time, 1 went into a lunch room. A wait er.wearipga white cap and white apron, asked me what 1 would have. I told him 1 came in for something to eat. 1 noticed he smiled and winked at another waiter. 1 thought 1 was being complimented, so 1 straightened up and felt important. After 1 finished my eats. [ con ctuded it was about my bed tipie. So I found a hote! and set my grip on the edge of the sidewalk, thinking I would knock at the door, like we do in the country. But the door turned all around and ! saw some fellows pass through, I done the same way. but came near being wedged. I went up to where ! saw some fellows writing in a hook. The fellow behind the counter asked me if 1 wished to register, 1 told him ! had registered years ago. and had voted many times. He said, "Do you wish to spend the night?" I said. "Sure." "Then write your name and address." he said. "You mean write my name and where 1 am from?" "Yes. said he. Then he asked me if I had any baggage. I said. "Of course." I went out to the edge of the sidewalk after my grip and found it had been stolen. Well, sir. 1 had to pay in advance. The clerk called a boy. wear ing a cap and plenty of brass but tons on his coat, to show me my room. He said, "Get in the ele vator," and I did. 1 think we went to the top Hoor, if not high er. Well, we got out of the thing. The boy unlocked a door and said, "Here is your room, boss." Now notice the word boss. As I was fixing to retire I tried to blow the light out like I do down home. The thing homed ail night. I just couldn't sleep.' ^ was so high up. It seemed that T was nearer the moon and stars than the earth. I thought I felt a ' HIGHTOWERS. N C. n . I went to the window to be certain. I .went back to bed, but I was certain I smelted smoke I- pulled out again to see if there Was Are con suming the hotel. I was up and down all night The fellow in the next room aired his wrath by saying, "What fool is that in the next room? He has kept me awake all night. , Nobody can sleep on the same door as long as he stays here." The next day 1 perambulated more or less, for I was getting tired out. f looked to see if a tall building was perpendicular. !t seemed to be. all right. You see f just meant safety Arst. I leaned hack against it for a good rest. I noticed the people pass, and heard them talking in almost every language Some seemed to roll their words over several times before spitting them oat. Such a medley of languages beat heavily on my ear drums. I sup pose the building of these sky scrapers must have caused a con fusion of tongues. As I was rest ing against the wall, many pas sers-by would smile at me. One fellow- asked me if 1 was holding the building up. I don't believe the President would have-attract ed more attention than 1 did while in New York. Well, about two o'clock I lit out for home. Of course, I went on the train. When 1 arrived home the old woman and the ^hildren surrounded me. asking me to tell about New York. And 1 did. H. i.
