considers itself able to enlist td M eecood^las* matter F^rn logig, at the poet otHee of Yaa N. C., under the Act of Mareh WITH THE The M fortunate tnst the help of W. H. WitXamson of Yancey^"' Mr. Williamson .s a good business man, a lover of his county, and fully committed to everything that pertains to her vqelfare. And in addition to that he is a conscientious, reliable, af fable Christian gentleman. With Mr. Williamson's hand on the wheel we are assured that the old ship can't go far wrong. HARD ON CHICKENS Apropos of the Methodist Con ference, which convenes at Dur ham on Wednesday of this week, L. G. Turner, of Burlington, quoted Rev. Mr. Norman, a Methodist preacher of blessed memory, as telling this joke on himself: Mr. Norman said he was at Conference one time, when on the morning of his departure from the home of his Conference host, a rooster came out from under the house and crowed, "N-o-r m a-n-s G-o-i-n-g! N-o-r-m a-n-s G-o-i-n-g! N-o-r-m-a-n-s G-o t-n-g!" And then a guinea came out of the bushes and replied. "Ain't I glad! Ain't f glad! Ain't I glad!" And when the guinea got through rejoicing an old duck came waddling up out of the water and threw his head up in the air, and said, "H-a-a! H-a-a! H a a! Ha-a!" Not to be outdone, A; D. Pate, also of the aforesaid town of Bur lington, said that when Confer ence was held in Burlington, one time, he couldn't get his old rooster to come down out of the tree to eat. and to keep him from perishing to death he carried feed and water up to him on one of the upper limbs of the tree. A!! we've got to say is that that was a mighty smart chicken. AN EVENT This week The Messenger is carrying considerably more than a full page ad for one of the enterprising country stores—War ren and Son, of Hightowers. In case the reader hadn't thought about it, this is written to say that it takes what is called nerve for a country store to ad vertise on such a sca!e. But Warren & Son have found that it pays or t^ey wouldn't in dulge in such a costly effort to expand their business. But why shouldn't a country store do well? Merchandise is now standardized to such an ex tent that the country merchant can sell identically the same goods at identically the same price as the city store. And sometimes the country store can sell the same goods for less, because the expenses of doing business is considerably less in the country. There is no reason why our country stores shouldn't do well how. Nationally advertised goods are usually sold at the same price everywhere. If the purchaser can buy the same goods at home for the same money there is no reason why he should make a trip to town to spend his money. Warren & Sort and the other advertisers of The Messenger, deserve the patronage of the home folks. BARTLETT YANCEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWS (CoctinMed from t'age !) ed exactly as yet. It is safe to confide, however, that one medal is to be given to the boy who is the best public speaker; and. the other is to be given to the girl who is the best public speaker. 1 he the donor is withheld on re gift of these medals comes at a -very opportune time, and already severa! boys and gir!s are getting themselves in readiness to com pete. * Have you seen the maps in the sixth grade room? Miss Lee and her room realized the need of something they did not ha.^e— maps. So they went about get ting them. And they went about it in the right way—the do it^ yourself way. They have the maps. They have a blackboard outline map of North and South Carolina which measures four-by six feet. They also have finished maps of North America and the United States of the same dimen sions. The maps meet specihca tions for state'requirements and the needs of the room. It is urged that before a room buy any sup plies that it be sure that the pur chase will count toward the ac crediting of the school It will not be long until Bartlett Yancey will have an accredited grammar school. The above maps were bought with funds raised by pri vate subscription from the pupils of the room. We say, with apologies to Cobb, that we are sorry that we could not play a better game Fri day. We were disappointed in the playing but were pleased with the good natured sportsmanship which we are led to beheve both teams manifested.
