PATTERSEJON, Manager j BURLINGTON, WRTH CAROLINA | rural competition . r‘n,‘ •> ._ Rural competition has chang ed a great deal, just as has life on t the farm, in the past fifty years. | Once the champion with the scy the. the wheat cradle, the ax or the husking peg was cock of the walk and a big man in the com munity. Machines now play a j much greater part in getting the farm work done, so the farmer has fallen in line (and has become a ’good machinist. Few of them, perhaps, will regret the changed conditions that have made them so. But rural competition still ex ists and. although changed, is as ever so strong. The fine results of this i competition are evident every where in the land. Competition among growers has developed the sheep and swine of the modern ’farms and has brought to the co untry its remarkable development of high-grade cattle. Boys corn and pig clubs are live competitors with their elders. The best yield I of wheat, oats or corn in the com munity gives just as much pride ; to the farmers whose /hard work produced it as ever. Rural competition has 'merely changed outwardly, just as the country has changed. It is still as much a part of the national life as ever and yields every bit as good results as it did a half cen tury ago. COVINGTON NEWS Mr. and Mrs. George Hatchett, who have been living in Oxford for several months, spent several days daring the Christmas holi days with friends and relatives !ruar Parley and Loseus Hill. After seeing how some of them look, it is easy to understand why children don’t believe in Santa Claus. You’ll find most of the Presi dential candidates parked under the mistletoe • these days, hoping that their party will spy them. Probably the purpose behind these schools of crime occasional ly mentioned in the newspapers Is to teach the young idea how to shoot. -• The American man needs more clothes conscidusness, says one au thority, hut it would he too had for some of them if it came on them quickly. New York drinkers.have been warned by physicians to test their hooch during the holidays, and they probably will with their eyes. If their dispute over the annual Army-Navy football game proves nothing else, it shows that both the Army and Navy are ready to fight. • Napoleon Rarnaparte may have been an important personage, but he never rated a bog on the front page, so he couldn't have been so famous, after ail. The brand of farm relief the .country needs is less than one ' half of one per cent vocal. Mothers might find it easier to coax some work out of their daugh j | ters now if they would only put a steering wheel somewhere in the kitchen. Chicago gangsters are reported to have sought court protection against the activities of police and j some kind judg may yet place a number of them behind the bars | where they will be safe. ■ .... Rotations of crops, -with legums} included, will pay in increased; yields and more fertile lands say j those men who have tried it. j NOTICE OF ADMINISTRATOR Having this day qualified as ad ministrator of the late W.
