THE GLEE CLUB.
ANNUAL MID-WINTER CONCERT.
A large audience greeted the
first appearance cf the Glee Club,
in Gerrard Hall, Jan. 27. It is
here that criticism is more freely
offered than, at any other place,
and if the appreciation of the
audience is an indication,the Con
cert was a great success.
The opening piece was Esdui-
antinay whih seemed to take the
audience r storm. The Club
responded with "We meet again
to-night Boys," as an . encore.
The warlbing of Mr. Ingle, in
' 'Daylight is on the Sea' ' was
taking, and- he responded bv
warbling 'Martin Bells. ' V 'The
Cradle Song, a Lullaby," by
Prof. Karl P. Harrington was
much appreciated, especially by
our worthy Professor of Chem
istry. The following were the
words, set to music :
Mrs.Winsi,ow's Soothing Syrup, has
been used for over fifty years by millions
of mothers for their children, while teeth
ing, with perfect success. ; It soothes the
child, softens the gums, allays all pain,
cures wind colic, and is the best remedy
for freshman. Sold by druggists in every
part of the world.- . Twenty-five cents a
bottle. .
The local hits in the ' 'Varsity
Seem Phunny," were evidently
relished and also "The Letter"
and "Tree in the Ground." A
party of young folks from Durham
came over to hear the Concert,
leaving on the morning train.
ANNUAL TOUR OF THE GLEE CLUB
HOSPITABLE RECEPTION
EVERYWHERE.
' On Tuesday, January 31st, the
Club left for the western part of
the State to give their annual se
ries of concerts. Stopping over
night at the McAdoo hotel : in
Greensboro, and after barely mak
ing connection, "we left for Ashe
ville, where the first concert was
to" be given Wednesday evening.
The weather was fine and the
Club enjoyed the mountain scene
ry of North Carolina froni the
rear platform of their Pullman.
. .We were welcomed at Ashe
ville by some of the old Univer
sity boys and conducted at once
to the Swannanoa hotel, where
we were treated royally.
The concert was given in the
Grand Opera House, before a
small and select audience, but an
appreciative one. The best ele
ment of AshevilleV society was
represented, and they seemed to
enjoy the concert, notwithstand
ing theCitizen's adverse criticism.
After the entertainment, man
ager McKissick, of the Battery
Park, extended an invitation to
the Club to a complimentary Ger
man given at the hotel,
man given at the hotel.
. Right here we commenced to
be ''hi it, ' ' getting deeper and
deeper "in it" till the end of our
trip 1 The dance was enjoyed
exceedingly, and even those who
were unable to take part, were
entertained by amply being there
at the Battery Park 1
About two hours of sleep were J
indulged in, .when. we vere awak
ened to take the train for Spar
tanburg. Those of us who were
not too sleepy, had the pleasure
of seeing a sun-riseiu the moun
tains. Pleasant reccollections were
brought up by the various places
passed. ' One fellow got out at
Saluda and wondered, half sleep
ily,, which house his "best girl
friend' ' lived in when she came
for her health ; whether it was
the little low-roofed house on the
hill, or the very fancy residence
on the left.
The amusements at Spartan
burg were few to pass away five
long hours. The town w a s
"done-up," including Wofford
College, where Prof. H and a
senior were u n 111 e r c i f u 1 1 y
"freshed" as they were passing
through the Campus on their way
to the President's office.
Leaving Spartanburg for Char
lotte, we passed such places of
interest as King's Mountain, and
Bessemer- the latter a place sup
posed to be "booming, " whe
streets are lost in the forests a"
electric-lights strung Irom one
tree to another. .
And now Charlotte ? Let the
members of the Glee Club stand
with uncovered heads and ask
each other whisperingly if their
hearts don't throb just a little
more violently at the. mention of
the mere name ! And the Char
lotte girls ! ; Let the boys testify
for themselves.
If there's any place where a
Varsity boy can feel at home,
that place is Charlotte. We were
met at the depot by" a committee
who assigned each of us to our re
spective places of entertainment.
At 8-30 P. M. , the concert was
begun in the Y. M. C. A., hall,
and the audience was with , us
from the start.
Immediately , afterwards, we
adjourned to . the rooms of the
limrary," where the young ladies
served us with refreshments; ;
From there, we were carried to
the new City Hall, to a German
complimentary to the club, and
it was, in every sense, "given to
the club" ' Even the girls seemed
(temporarily of course ! ) ' 'given
to the club," in fact the city of
Charlotte was ' 'ours' ' for the time
being; and it is certain we enjoy
ed it to the fullest extent. An
other two hours' sleep was en
joyed and we left for Greensboro
early Friday morning.
The General Secretary of the
Y. M. C. A. ; (under whose au
. ... ... . 1
spices tne concerts were to oe
given) met us and we were again
distributed to our places, and the
good people of Greensboro seemed
to vie with Charlotte in making
our stay as pleasant as possible.
At 3:30 p. mwe were driven
to the State Normal and Indus
trial College, where we were bul
letined to appear at 4 p. ui. The
stage was very tastily decorated
in white and blue with U. N. C.
in large letters in the center, and
even the parlors were dressed for
the occasion, with two mono
grams "N? and I" sand "U. N.
C." opposite to each other, the
decorations being of silk in white
and blue. The concert being over,
we were invited by Prof. Mclver
and Miss Kirkland, the lady prin
cipal, to a reception given by the
young ladies. And it ; zcas a re
ception. We were received with
we were about to say witlfopen
arms,-but the reception only last
ed from five till seven. We are
proud of our sister college and we
may be sure the N. and I. will
stand by the University first, last
and all the time.
We went direct from . the col
lege to the court house and began
our last concert at 8:30 p. in. ..The
audience was just such a one as
Greensboro always gives large,
appreciative and kind. Our royal
time was not ended yet, however.
jukiiown to the' Club, the young
people of the city had planned
and prepared a reception and
dance at the McAdoo hotel, and
immediately after the concert we
were invited to godown. Although
-' the latter part of the plan, viz. :
the dance, had to be omitted, the
occasion was none the less en
joyed. Everyone was ready to
convince the trio in "A Little
Farm Well Tilled" that the wish
of two members could be fulfilled
right there in Greesboro, and the
third member of the trio could be
induced very easily to change his
mind. Saturday morning, Feb
ruary '4th, the Glee Club returned
to Chapel Hill.
The trip was a thorough suc
cess in everj' way good weather,
good houses and a good time. It
was hard to find anyone individ
ual to thank personally for the
courtesies show!! the club, and it
seemed as though everyone com
bined spontaneously to welcome
the Glee Club at each place. The
Club, then, simply thanks Ashe
ville, Charlotte, Greensboro and
the State Normal and Industrial
College for the pleasant entertain
ments by the Club during their
western trip. ,
