Book Notice.
' A Short History of Chemistry, by
P. P. Venable, Ph. D., University
of N. C. D. C. Heath and Co.
cloth 171 pages. Price $1.00.
Even by a mere glance through
the table of contents of the volunme
noted above, it is easily seen that
such a book as this is of great value
to anv one desirinc a knowledge of
the history of this facinating science;
and who does not care to wade
through the oas-es of the larger
foreie-n treaties on the subiect. It
is written with a view to lining
the long felt want for such a book,
written in the English language,
presenting the subject systemati
cally and concisely, and yet giving
a connected view of the growth and
development of the science. "The
book is an outcome of a course of
lectures tested during three years
use with students. All the chief
authorities have been consulted and
where possible the original writings
refered to. The aim has been to so
digest and systematize this mass of
material as to render it available
for those desiring a general knowl-
ege of the subject." ' '
Exchanges.
The Lehigh Broxvn and White is
a welcome visitor, twice a week.
It is always newsy and contains
good reading. Just now, it is agi
tating the question of the Honor
System in Examinations. We are
glad to be in more intimate relations
with this progressive University
College Topics seems to be little
desirous of gaining the esteem "and
goodwill of other southern colleges.
Its sarcastic reply to the Hustler's
remarks on Vanderbilt's unavailing"
efforts to secure a game with Vir
srinia is hardly calculated to win
many friends in the Tennessee Uni
versity. But in other respects,
Topics does very well; its editorials
show much ability. Our sister uni
versity in Virginia has the same cares
as we; they are now laboring with
a srrasping- taculty, and Lollesre
Topics says, 4 'Our faculty individ
naly are as wise and learned as any
set of men on the face of this green
earth, but when they put their heads
ogether, no mathematical calcula
tion can foretell what the result will
be. As individuals, thev are stars.

A Wonderful Invention.
Zoology teaches us that the hairs of' the
head are hollow,' and contain an oil that
gives them life. In clipping the hair with
scissors, this hollow is left open, and the hair
loses its life-giving properties. ; .
I have a Machine named the Singeing
Machine, which removes the nair ana at tne
same time closes up the hollow causing the
hair to retain its life-giving properties, and
therefore stopping the hair from falling out
or dying and giving it a soft life growth.
Call and examine this machine and have
Your hair sincred.
Special attention given to dressing Ladies
hair. Cutting hair done with exquisite and
artistic skill by the old University Barber of
twenty years experience.
The Singeing Machine is mgniy recom
mended by scientists throughout the cotin
try. Very respectfully,
'X . V. JJUJSS'iUiN,
