State Aid. "HOW'S THIS?" At the new Pho tographic Studio of The legislature has met and ad-j johnnonfic ssmithi journed. having; declared that the people, representing- three different political parties, are opposed to any proposition which will check the pro gress of education in North Caroli na. We recall the wise words of our president, who said at the beginning-of the session that he did not for a moment fear the result, when left to the people of North Carolina or their representatives in the Legislature, whatever party might be in power. The words have proved true', and the question of state aid to higher education has met with a solution, the justice of which will never be doubted by the people as a whole, though self : ish individuals may from time to time attempt to agitate the matter. Had the Legislature of North Carolina seen fit to withdraw state aid from the University, our state would have stood alone m this great nation as an enemy to civilization and educational progress. But such is not the case and never will be. Such a policy could not be ex pected or desired by the intellect of our great state. He who would now condemn the action of the Leg islature, representing three political parties and four great religious de nominations, must feel that his own opinion is more to be resp ited than the opinion of the people aa wh ft A step forward has "U-t-n "taken in giving an extra appropriation to the Normal and Industrial Sdioo at Gr nsboro, and the provision i or two hundred rnore young ladies to receive an education should meet with applause from every fire-side in the State The committees that visited these institutions were composed of men who were entirely disinterested, many Of whom never had a college education.
