AtUal Stevenson.
Adlai Stevenson, Vice President
of the United States, will address
theclass of '96 upon ..the. event, of
their graduation. He accepted the
invitation which President Winston
went to Washington last week to
give him.
Mr. Stevenson is too well known
to tell you anything 1 of him. He is
a native of North Carolina and his
fluent and eloquent speeches on his
last visit to his native State are re
membered with pleasure by all
who heard him and we anticipate
much pleasure in hearing this great
speaker again.
Dr. Winston is to be congratula
ted on securing- Mr. Stevenson and
the class of '96 is to be congratula
ted on having such an eminent man
to address them.
Both President Winston and Dr.
Hume report a pleasant trip to
Washington and speak in high terms
of the kindness shown them by out-
North Carolinians at the Capitol.
Dr. Hume in Washington.
The Doctor returned this week
from Washington where he has
been to attend the Congress of The
National Society of Religious Edu
cation. He was among the brilliant
speakers of the programme which
numbered over thirty speakers. His
subject was "Religious Education
in the Home. " His speech was oE
great interest,coming from a South
ener and from a man of such elo
quence as Dr. Hume.
He dealt with education of the
people through the influence of home,
showing the relation around the
Christian fireside, of husband to
wife, brother to sister, and parent
to child. He showed too, as was
admitted by all present, that the
Higher social life of the South, was
due to their home influence. His
address was much complimented,
the President of the Congress pro
nouucing it to be "philosophical'
profound and artistic."
New Foot Ball Rules.
The Committee, consisting of
Messrs. Camp, Moffat, Sears, Bell
Dennis and Dashiel.have completed
the new rules for the coming sea
son on the gridiron. This commit
tee, it will be seen, is composed of
representatives of most of the lar
ger Northern Universities and the
rules as compiled by them will
govern all foot ball contests, so that
there will be no division as to the
systems of playing. Several impor
tant changes have been made and
the rules should insure better sup
port than ever. One of the mos
important changes is in anew rule
that no delay from any cause shal
last more than three minutes, under
penalty of a foul being granted, giv
ing the opponents of the offending
side the ball or ten vards. This
rule is one which has long been
needed and it, if well enforced, wil
stop the disagreeable and disgust'
ing kicking which has wearied many
an audience and caused much hatred
between rival colleges.
The committee deserve credit for
their good work and we think the
rules will do much toward removing
from the manly game of foot ball,
those things which have put it
somewhat in disfavor.

"Hon! Soit Qui Maly Pense."
We can't say whence our infor
mation, but if any of you ever notict
such things, you may have seen a
handsome blue silk garter, clasped
with a silver daisy, in the window
of a leading: leweler not far away.
If not, it is too late now, for, as
the story goes, it was sent not long
ago as a present to a young lady on
her nineteenth birth-day. Her ac
knowledgement, which has just
come into our hands in one in one
of those mysterious ways, we ven-
utreto print Eds.
"Honi soit qui mal y pense"
To Lady fair quoth Gallant Bold
But I'll tell you en avance
Mine is not the story old;
Mine a maiden picking cresses
Where knee-high the daisies grew;
Shaking hard her draggled dresses
Showed a band of ribbon blue.
'Twas a daisy who discerned it
(Though the sun was in his eye)
What's a secret when you have learned it
If we profit not thereby?
So this wily little flower
(Ox-eyed gossips tell the tale)
To obtain the precious dower
'Round him drew a silver veil.
Daisy Ribbon Maiden? Leave tliem
Grant them pleasure en avance ,
'Twould an outrage be to give them
"Honi soit qui mal y pense."
