The 'Varsity gave an exhibition of fine ball playing in the game with the Franklin, Va., team on Tuesday afternoon. This time there was no weaken ing from beginning to end, but all the team played together in a man ner seldom seen this year, with the result that , they walked over the Franklin-Wake Forest combination to the tune of 180. - The visitors had three of the strongest Wake Forest players to help, them, namely Edwards, Wil-j liams and Norfleet,' but it availed nothing against the 'Varsity. While all our men played good ball, Capt Stanly was easily the "star," and was continually cutting off hits and otherwise deporting himself be tween second and third bases in a manner to take one's breath away. His hitting and base running were both up to the top notch too, so that on the whole he gave our friends from Virginia quite a brilliant dis play of skillful, scientific ball play ing. Rogers made a beautiful play in right field in the seventh inning; when he gathered in a clean hit and cut off the runner at first base. Williams and Mangum did good work in the box for Carolina, only one hit being gotten off of each of them. Franklin went to the bat first; but went out 'in one, two, three or der, and continued the performance almost without let-up till the last man was out in the ninth inning. 1 NORTH CAROLINA. Payers. Events Smash Southern Records. Fab Haywood of Raleigh Does a Hundred Yard Dash In Ten 1 Seconds. Mr.; Mechling did well in select ing last Saturday for Field Day. It could not have been prettier over head and under foot the track was fast but a little too hard. Virginia heretofore was in the lead in each of the six events, but now they need six inches on the pole vault, two seconds ou the 220 yard run, four feet on the hammer throw and several seconds on each the high hurdles and 440 yard run. Every undertaking must have its beginning and if we are to consider the results of last Saturday's con tests as "starters what glory and honor is laid up for the old Tar Heel University. , The events and results were as follows: 100 Yard Dash. Haywood, first time 10 seconds; McEachern 2nd; Osborne, 3rd. Pole Vault Harris, 1st, height, 8 ft 10 inches; Wright, R. 2nd. 220 Yards Haywood 1st time, 23 3-4 seconds; McEachern 2nd; Os borne fell twenty feet from the wire when in second place. Hammer Throw Monk, H. L., 1st, 87 feet 7 inches; Baggett, 84 ft 10 inches; Canada, P., 72 ft. 6 inches Pond, G. B. 4th place. High Hurdle (120) Harris C. E., 1st, 21 1-5 seconds; Follin fell at next to last hurdle when a full hur dle in the lead. 440 Yards McEarchern 1st, 46 4-5 seconds; Pond 2nd. Director, Mechling; Starter; Dr.' Chas Mangum. Judges, Dr. Chas Baskerville, Mr. Butler and Geo. Stevens. The Georgia Trip. In Atlanta Frank Rogers sang "Marching through Georgia," and the patriotic Crackers hissed. The Georgia boys were losing breath run ning around the field. A fly over Whitaker's head' in deep centre, a bouncing fly out of McKee's reach and a muff by our business manager let in seven runs. How can you blame him for muffing occasionally? Throw your $1.50 subscription at him and keep him in in practice. The team stopped at the Kimball in Atlanta, but Winston, it is said, tried to get lodging in a railroad ticket of fice. All the erirls on Peach tree Street thought Whitaker and Bailey stunn ing- in "their"(?) golfs. They coumn t understand why Mangum never wore them. In Athens McKee and Belden tried to find the Turks.
