Opponents.
A CLOSE, CLEAN CONTEST.
Twenty five men, including 'Var
sity, Substitutes and Scrubs left
Chapel Hill last Wednesday for
Richmond, to agfain meet the Uni
versity of Virginia on the gridiron.
Richmond was reached Wednesday
evening" at six o'clock, the team stop
ping at the Hotel Jefferson.
Thursday morning1 dawned cold
and cloudy. A thick mist hung-over
the city and rain seemed probable
The sun, about noon, made several
attempts to come oiit and see the
srame, but these attemots were fu
tile and the afternoon was cloudy,
though no rain fell. As early as
one o'ebek people bjga:: to arrive
at West End Park, where the great
game was to be played. By two
o'clock car after car was emptying
itsload of humanity into the street
south of , the park, who poured into
the grounds through the different
entrances.
In crowd that filled the grand
stand and bleacheries, the wearers
of the orange and blue ribbon were
in the majority; yet the white and
blue was there in all its giwry, .aid
though its wearers were fewer in
number, yet they were just as zeal
ous for their favorites and often
more so.
Atten minutes before threeo'clock
both teams came on the grounds.
Virginia arrived first and entering
at the north east ran across to the
west end of the field. A few min
utes later Carolina's team entered

Promptly at 3 o'clock the game
began and for one hour and ten min
utes of steady playing, each team,
each man did his best, battling for
glory of their alma mater.
Carolina played the game of the
day was the sentiment generally
expressed when both sides returned
from the gridiron shortly after 5
o'clock. Virginia, outweighing
Carolina twenty , five pounds to the
roan, was held down to a small score.
Virginia was confident of a walk
over, and when they scored the first
touch-down in seven minutes, ' the
spectators believed 'the same thing,
so when Carolina repeatedly held
the strong line of Virginia for three
downs, they" were astonished. The
prophecies of the score were for 30
and 40. to 0 in favor of Vi
say they were surprised would be
putting it lightly.

Coach Reynolds ' says he is proud

To mention the good individual
