Improvements in the Gymnasium. The All-America baseball team

College Athlete, for the season of
To satisfy the growing" needs of
the 'gymnasium, a number of new
features will be added in a few
days.
This has been contemplated for
some time, and now that the ap
paratus has been ordered, and on
the way ; the gymnasium will short
ly offer new attractions and oppor
tunities lor recreation and sport.
Perhaps the most attractive fea
ture of the work this fall will be,
basket ball, an immensely popular
and highly beneficial form of sport.
Basket-ball has come to stay; it
grows more popular year by year,
and for some time has been the fore
most indoor game.
In the North and West large
crowds witness games between col
leges, Y. M. C. A's, and team 5
from different athletic organiza
tions, State and National Guards
etc.
Already it has its league, a large
and well organized body.
It's introduction in the "gym."
will, judging from it's reception
elsewhere in the state prove a great
success.
As a game it offers many good
features to the player, combining
rapid judgement with swiftness - of
motion, demanding almost constant
movement, it requires and develops
"wind." It also offers attractions
for those who do not enjoy foot
ball, or other like forms of sport,
there is no "talking" of the player
in Basket-ball or using the body to
hinder a play, though the hands
and arms are used freely,
i To the spectator it is exciting,
when the game is understood ; and
makes a very interesting spectacle.
It is easily seen then, that an in
teresting series of games could be
arranged between the classes and
departments of the University; and
possibly with other institutions,
j It is hardly necessary to mention
"punch bags," two of which will
be placed just beneath the balcony
of the gallery.
They are "Spaldings Special
Gymnasium Bag," very fine in
quality, and lively.
There are few men who do not
enjoy this kind of "punch" whether
teetotalers or not.
In addition to these, some hygiene
apparatus will be added, new chest
weight machines with attachments
for leg and neck exercises. (;'"
We will then with these additions
have a fairly equipped gymnasium.
The intelligent use of which will
put almost any one in splendid trim
for track work in the spring, and
improve health.
All that remains is, endeavor and
enthusiam, and it will be easy to
equal at least, and if not surpass the
work of former years.
Virginia and Columbia will play
another game of foot ball, as the
last one broke up in a quarrel.
College Topics says: "We are
glad to announce that another game
with Georgetown has been arranged
to be played on their grounds.
This gives us an opportunity to
demonstrate that Virginia has
what she claims, the representative
foot ball team of the south."
Captain Collier in a letter to
Topics gives his side of the dispute
in the first game.
1808, is as follows :
Pitcher Greenway (Yale)
Catcher Kafer (Princeton)
1st Base Keley (Princeton)
. 2nd " Houghton (Harvard)
3rd " Lauder (Brown)
Short stop Camp (Yale)
R Field Wallace (Yale)
C " Wear (Yale)
L " Rand (Harvard)
College Topics.
The University of Chicago has
conferred the degree of Doctor of
Laws on President McKinley.
"We are glad to learn that Mr.
George Stephens has consented to
train our foot ball team. Mr
Stephens is an experienced foot
ballist and Davidson is fortunate in
securimr his services." Davidson
College Magazine. "George" had
better look out for his team next
Saturday!

A Wonderful Invention.
Zoology teaches that the hairs of the head
are hollow, and contain an oil that gives
them life. In clipping the hair with scis
sors, this hollow is left open, and the hair
loses its life-giving properties.
I have a Machine named the Singeing Ma
chine, which removes the hair and at the
same time closes up the hollow, causing the
hair to retain its life-giving properties, and
therefore stopping the hair from falling out
or dying, and giving it a soft growth.
Call and examine this machine and have
your hair singed.
Special attention given to dressing La
dies' hair. Cutting done with exquisite and
srtistis skill by the old University liarber
of twenty years' experience.
The singing machine is highly recom
mended by scientists throughout the country.
