DR McIVER DEAD. University Loses a Loyal Son and the State an Excellent Citizen. On the Bryan Special between Durham and Hillsboro, Dr. Chas. D. ! Mclver, President of the State Normal College of Greensboro, died suddenly of appoplexy about half past three o'clock Monday afternoon. Both the state and the University sutler greatly in his loss. For years Dr. Mclver had been one of the lead ing spirits in the educational move ment in the state. Perhaps there is no one whose work could be more greatly missed in that field. . Dr. Mclver graduated at his state University in 1881, and although his life has since been a " busy one he has never forgotten his alma mater. Every commencement brought him back to the Hill, and he was always a principal speaker at the Alumni banquet. In' 1893 he received the degree of L.L.D. conferred by the University of Nor,th Carolina. The tolling of the college bell at noon on Tuesday, the hour of the funeral, reminded every student on the cam pus how great was our loss, as well as the state's. In the future he will be missed here especially. Sophomore Election. V On Monday afternoon, the 17th, at 2:30 the Sophomore class met in Gerrard Hall and elected the fol lowing officers: ; P. P. The class of '09 deserves credit for its action in con fining itself to the reasonable num ber of executives enumerated above. The first issue of The Tar HEEL will be sent to every man in college.
