been ill for some time, is now much
improved.
Mr. T. N. Pittman, ex '07, visit
ed the Hill last week. Mr. Pitt
man has held a position with the
Illinois Central R. R. in Chicago
since leaving- college.
Mr. H. h. Fry, :ex '06, returned
to the Hill last week for a brief
visit. Mr. Fry is now oue of the
assistant engineers of the Southern
Railway, 1 with headquarters' at
Charlotte.
Mr. John Wood, '06, who is. in
business with his father at Eden
ton, N. C, could not resist the
v temptaion to return to the Hill this
fall. Mr. R. EJ, Clader,ialso of '06,
was here at the same; time.

Mr. V. h. Stephenson. '06 editor-
Jn-cbief of the Tar Heel, is now
on the editorial staff of the Char
lotte Observer and is doing . some
good work in his new position. Mr.
C. P. Russell, another ex-editor
in-chief of the Tar Heel, is at
present one of the assistant editors
of the Sunday New York Press.
EUsha Mitchell Scientific Society.
On Monday afternoon of last
week the Elisha Mitchell Scieutific
Society met in the Chemistry lec
ture room and elected officers for
the coming year. Dr. C. H. Herty
was chosen president. Dr. W. C.
Coker vice-president, Dr. F. P
Venable, corresponding secretary,
and Dr. A. S. Wheeler, recording
secretary Drs. W. C. Coker and
Archibald Henderson and
Prof. J. E. Latta were ap
pointed on the editing committee of
the journal of the society.
The Elisha Mitchell Scientific
Society is probably the oldest or
ganization of its kind in the South.
Its journal,' which is published
quarterly as a record of the scien
tific work done by the students and
faculty of the University, is in con
stant demand by the leading edu
cational Institutions in the United
States and abroad, being on the ex
change list of practically all of the
great German universities. The
society received its name in honor
of Dr. Elisha Mitchell, for a num
ber of years Professor of Geol
ogy at the University, who lost
his life while engaged in scien
tific research in the mountains of.j
western North Carolina.

On Saturday night last the Phi
Chi medical fraternity initiated the

one man, Mr. Beuford Williams, to

preliminary schedule of the attract
ions that they have secured. No
exacts .dates have been settled
upon as yet. The schedule wil
be printed as soon as it is decide(
upon. The opening attraction for
this fall is the Schubert Quartette
which will appear here some time
in October. Among the prominent
persons to come later are Leland
Powers, Dr. Lyman Abbott, Dr
Thos. E. Greene and Alton Pack
ard.
Dr. Lyman Abbott will reach the
University on some date in Novem
ber, and the student body will be
pleased to learn that he intends re
maining in Chapel Hill over Sun
day in order to deliver a sermon in
Gerrard Hall.

the program is Alton Packard,
the humorist and lightning carica
turist who visited the Hill four
years ago. The members of the
student body who were so fortunate
as to witness his first performance
here will look forward to Mr. Pack
ard's return with pleasure.
It is probable that one or more
attractions may be added later to
the list here given. The program
this year is a highly creditable one
to the committee, and promises to
be much superior to the one of last
year.
LOCAL NOTES
The Chapel Hill. Boarding
Club, which was operated last
year at the Cannady school build
ing, is now located at the house
formerly occupied by Mrs. Berry
There vill be a continuous re
port of the Davidson-Coi-olina foot
ball game , Saturday afternoon at
3:15 in the chapel. The admission
fee will be twenty-five cents. All
students should attend.

During the summer the work o
recataloguing the library was con
tinued by Messrs. B. E. Washburn
and H. H. 'Hughes under the super
vision of the librarian, Dr. L. R
Wilson. For several years this
work of recataloffuinff according to
the Dewey system has been pushed
forward. This summer some two
thousand volumes were recatalo
