PERSONALS Mr. Louis Graves, one of the University's star quarters, who has 'been for some time with the New York Times, is nw with the pub lication' department of the Penn sylvania Railway. Mr. Albert W. Latta, who left the University a year ago, aftej having taken advanced work in physics and applied electricity here, has been appointed to a permanent position on the erecting engineering staff of the General Electric Co., with headquarters at Philadelphia. Mr. Ployd Simmons, formerly a student at Washington and Jeffer son and a noted athlete at that institution, is now on the Hill as assistant football coach. Mr, Sim .mous is taking law and will re main here the entire year. He will coach the baseball team next spring. Mr. Ivey P. Lewis, '02, who will, be a student at Johns Hopkins this year, has been visiting his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Kemp Phimmer Battle. Last year Mr. Lewis was professor of biology at Randolph Macon college while the regular professor in that depart ment was away"on leave of absence. Jefferson has always received a arge share ot. our medical students, but this yearv our representation there is unusually large. . Nine of last year's second year meds are now taking the third year there. They are: O. H.. Terrell, John Berry, F. C. Hyatt, T. IL Smith, lT. D. Kitchen, R. T. Upchurch. W. IL.Braddy, J. V. Howard and T. M. Smith. LOCAL NOTES Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee met on Monday afternoon to transact bus iness relative to the. expenses of the team on its trip North at the end of the week. In the future all appropriations for athletic teams will be made through the treasurer of the' athletic association. Hith erto there ""has been . no such arrangement, and for this reason, more or less confusion has arisihi in keeping the accounts each season. It was announced that Mr. EMoyd Simmons, now assistant coach on the football team would coach the 'Varsity baseball team next spring. A committee was appointed to consider the advisability of secur-i ing a coach for the track team next; spring. As most of the 'Varsity football material will come in the future from the class teams, steps, were taken 1 relative to supplying the class teams with coaching this fall Hon. W. W. Kitchin addressed the citizens of Orange countv last Friday afternoon on the issues of the day. Mr. Kitchen spoke from the porch of Pickard's Hotel. Quite a number of the students attended. .1 i j (. Dr. Joseph Hyde Pratt enter tained the members of the A. T, O. fraternity at his home on Durham Road last Friday night, at a stag dinner in honor of the initiation of his brother-in-law, Mr. Elden Bayley, of Springfield, Ohio. Dr. and Mrs. Geo. Howe enter tained Thursday night in honor of Dr. Howe's mother and sister, Mrs. Howe, and Miss Howe of Princeton, N. J., Mrs. Howe's sister, Mrs. Gelland, of Columbia, S. C. Miss Axon,' also of Columbia, and Miss Caro Gray, of Raleigh. A general meeting of the classes in English 1 was held in the chapel on Friday afternoon of last week. Prof. E. K. Graham addressed the students in first year'English, giv ing them some 'helpful suggestions in regard to the study of our lan guage. Several such meetings will be held at intervals during the year. The Raleigh News and Obser ver of the 26th ult. anuounc the marriage of Miss Mamie Stroud of Greensboro to Mr. Edgar D. Broad hurst. THe Wedding will occur on October 18th. Mr. Broadhurst, who graduated, at the University several years ago and is well rem embered here, is now a prominent lawyer of Greensboro. The Di and Phi, according to custom, initiated Freshmen last Saturday night. 46 men joined the Dialectic society and 51 the Philau thropic. The total number initiated by each society now amounts to: Di 62, Phi 58. Owing to the amount of time consumed by the initiation the regular, debate was done away with in each society. . W. I The Seniors met in the;Chapel on Saturday afternoon and took action in regard to the recent hazing. Re solutions were passed by the major ity of the class appointing every man in the class a committee to report all hazing that may come under hi notice to the student council. i Messrs Parker, Highsmith, Day and O' Berry were appointed on a committee to investigate the case of Freshman Hatch. Messrs W. H. Duls, J. F. Spruill, and J. T. McAden s were chosen Senior , marshalls for the Uni versity Day exercises. Geological Seminary. The Geological Seminary met on Tuesday night at 7: 30 for the sec ond time this year. Prof. Cobb dis cussed, for the benefit of the new students in geology, the geological formation of the Chapel Hill region. No papers were read by members of the club. At the first : meeting for the year papers wer'e presented by E. B. Jeffress and R. B. Hardison.
