M. C. A. has assumed a large part of the salary and expenses of Mr. Charles Luther Boy n ton, a graduate of Pomona College, California, and also - of Union Theological Seminary, New York, who is now on the Pacific en route to Shanghai, China, where he goes to act as office secretary for the National Committee of the Young Men's Christian Association of China. The contributions for missions made by the students this year through the association will be applied to Mr. Boynton's. work, and the Missionary Department hopes to raise at least one hundred dollars for this put pose. His work in the office will include the administration of the national budget, the care of the records of the; national and local movements, the publication of literature for use in connection with the Associa tion movement among Chinese speaking peoples, and a vast amount of other detailed work ne cessarily entailed. It will be possible for Mr. Boyn ton to enter, more immediately upon this service than almost any other new man has been able to do, for the office of the General Com mittee is already equipped and par tially manned. His program for the first three years will include the study of Chinese in the morn ings and the care of the office during the afternoons, with the privilege of working in the local Associations of Shanghai. By this office work he will be able to aid as vitally the work of every other man in the field as could be done in anT other way. Di and Phi. Up in the Phi Societ) it was Junior-Senior debate night last Sat urday night. The question wrestled with was: "Resolved, That our legal system should be so changed as to provide for trial by a committee of judges instead of by jury." The decision was rendered in favor of the affirmative, and Mr. Katzenstein made the best speech. The Dialectic debaters discussed the new and startling proposition: "Resolved, That the government should qwu and operate all trunk lines of railway." Fresh oysters received daily at Pickard and Strowd's Cafe. Undergraduate Department. The One Hundred and Forty-first Session will begin September 28, 1906. The course, which covers a period of four years, of eight and one-half months each, is eminently practical, and properly graded, beginning with laboratory instruction in the fundamental subjects, and concluding with a comprehensive system of clinical instruction, terminating in the Fourth Year with the assignment of students as clinical clerks in the Hospital. A large proportion (at least 80 per cent.) of the graduating classes secure positions , as Resident Physicians in Hospitals. Summer School for Graduates. The clinics and laboratories of this Department are open throughout the year for the behefit of those who wish to engage in graduate work. For those whose time is more limited, a comprehensive course is given, beginning thig year May 14, and continuing for a period of six weeks.
