1 LOCAL NOTES Dr. and Mrs. P. P. Veuable left the Hill Monday to spend several days in Baltimore. The student members of the Ad visory Committee will meet in the Y. M. C. A. building tonight at 7:30. Professor Collier Cobb will lec ture tonight before the Scientific Society of Guilford College on the subject, "The Wind as a Geologi cal Agent." John A. Parker, '06, managed to borrow enough time from his strenu ous business life to pay his friends on the Hill a short visit .last Fri day and Saturday. Professor J. H. Gore, of George Washington University, brother of Prof. J. W. Gore, will deliver a public lecture at the University of North Carolina early in April. At a meeting of the Senior class Saturday afternoon a committee was appointed to petition the faculty for the privilege of holding stag germans more frequently in the gymnasium. All of the students engaged in re search work in chemistry met at the residence of Dr. C. H. Herty Monday night. Each mau present gave a brief review of his' work ac complished so far. Dr. Smith Away. Dr. C. Alphonso Smith of the Department of English has been absent from the University on a Northern trip this week. On Mon day night', in response to the invi tion of President Schunnan of Cor nell, he lectured before the stu dents and faculty of Cornell Uni versity on the subject of "Litera ture and Industralism." To night Dr. Smith delivers-, an edu cational address in Richmond. Dr. Herty's Lecture. On -Saturday, March 2nd, Dr. Charles H. Herty of the Depart ment of Chemistry lectured before the Chemical Club in New York, at their invitation, on .the subject of turpentine. His lecture was large ly attended by manufactrers of paints and varnishes, as well as by the chemists- of New York, and aroused such interest that Dr. Her ty was asked to repeat the lecture before the students and faculty of the New Hampshire State College. This he did on Monday night, March 4th. cleverest originator in his profes sion", one rivaling even the great Houdin, and a contributor of "new ideas in magic and legerdemain", his performance fell exceedingly flat. Edwin Brush, the wizard who visited us last year, outclasses him entirely. The Y. M. C. A. was unfortunate in not securing a more pleasing attraction to close its lyceum season, this being the last that it will offer this spring. It had expected to present The Victor Venetian Band, twenty-two instru ments,, on the 27th, but was unable to close the engagement. TRADE 'WITH Pickard Strowd, DEALERS IN Base Hits. Only 8 to 0 that's all. Romy is still swatticg a few. Didn't Racey use his head nicely? Isn't Whitaker a scientific thief? Didn't that three baggar of Mor row's jar 'em? Morrow only mowed down ten men in four innings. When young America starts a scrap it will put a big league game on the pig. , ' To see Judge Brock well knock "coons" off the fence was worth the price of admission. Did you notice how that left fielder played back when Story and Bull came to the bat? The Magician. Joseffy, the Magician, appeared in Gerrard Hall Wednesday nitrht of last week before a large audience which he succeeded signally in fail ing to charm. Most of the tricks that he presented were old and uninteresting, the closing number of the program, "The Magic Skull," proving about the only exception. The violin solos were slightly better than the magic part of the "entertainment", but they could not atone for the ceaseless fire of antiquated puns that the wizard kept going at his audience. Considering the fact that Joseffy had' been recommended editorially by the lyceum management as "the Scrubs Down Varsity. It is seldom that such comes to pass but Monday afternoon the Scrubs trimmed the Varsity to the tune of 8 to 0, Thompson doing the twirl ing for the second team, and Racey for the first. It is reported that Coach Simmons is contemplating ordering nine brand new tin cans, so the Scrubs are working harder than ever. Negro Rhodes Scholar. The Rhodes scholarship for the State of Pennsylvania has this year been awarded to a colored man, Alain LeRoy Locke, a senior at Harvard University. In the will of the late Cecil Rhodes it is provided that color or religion shall make no difference in the selection of the candidate, and Locke was chosen on his merits. There were five who passed the ex aminations which were held at Lafayette College on January 17 and 18, and of these Locke was deemed the best fitted to receive the reward. Locke will be the first negro to get one of the American Rhodes scholarships. He declares it to be his intention to devote . himself to study while abroad and to apply himself to. bettering the condi tion and general education of his race on his return to the United States. College Clippings. One of the latest Boston move ments is to give newsboys col lege courses at Harvard. Plans are on foot to establish a new university in Chicago, to be known as Carnegie University. The University of Pennsylvania will engage in swimming meets with the University of Chicago, the Chicago Athletic Aassociation, the University of Illinois, and possibly the Illinois Athletic Association during April.
