1 LOCAL NOTES John Donnelly, '09, and Hall Johnston, '03, were on the Hill Tuesday. The Soph-Junior game will be played on the new athletic field tomorrow afternoon at 3:45. The Odd Number Club will meet at 7:30 tomorrow niht in the English conference room. The Economics Seminary met Monday night to discuss the ques tion of municipal ownership ' of street railways. . Professor M. C. S. Noble deliv ered the address at the commence ment exercises of the Guilford Col lege public schools Saturday night President J. A. Fore and General Secretary P. B. Rankin of the Y. M. C. A. attended the inter-state conference of the association for the Carolinas, held in Wilmington last Erida' to Monday. Tickets for the Glee Club and Orchestra concert, tomorrow night week, are now on sale at Eubanks' drug store. This concert should be liberally patronized by the stu dents. At the Geological Seminar)' Tuesday night Professor Collier Cobb gave an illustrated lecture on "The Atmosphere as a Geological Agent," the lecture being especially for the Freshman class. Mr. J. T. Fraley, who has acted as agent for the Southern at Chapel Hill for the past five years, re signed Saturday and went to Greensboro to accept a position with the Southern Express Com pany. He was succeeded Monday by Mr. M. Ellis, of Durham. Departed! "Colliers Collector" has gone. Undaunted by the warning adorned with the gruesome skull aud cross bones he stuck valiantly to his job until Saturday. But the best of perseverance must flag at last, and he finally shook the dust of Chapel Hill from his feet in the firm be lief that no such person as "Vic" Williams ever existed. Doubtless he felt to assure himself of the safety of his watch, and breathed a sigh of deep relief as The Limited started down the grade toward University. No, no more college collecting for him! Yet if he had tried the proper tactics he would probably have left the Hill with his pockets jingling with coin. Chemical Journal Club. At the meeting of the Chemical Journal Club Monday night the following papers were read: "The Fixation of Atmospheric Nitrogen", Mr. G. F. Leonard. "New Oxidizing Agents," Mr. D. P. Tillet. "The Radio-activity of Radium Bromide at High and Low Temper atures," Mr. J. E. Pogue. "Nitrogen in Iron and Steel," Dr. R. O. E. Davis. A Popular Score. Nine to five was the result again Saturday afternoon, when the Se niors defeated the Freshmen. Al though the Seniors had the lead from the start and were never in any danger of losing, the game was more interesting than the one be tween the Sophs and Juniors the afternoon before. On the whole it was a better sample of baseball, although it might have been im proved in spots. Pemberton, for '07, pitched a neat game. Wood and Hobbs, the Freshman pitchers, were hit freely. The next of the class championship series; will be between the Sophs and Seniors to morrow afternoon. A False Alarm. In the Charlotte Observer of the 25th, was printed a report to the effect that Dr. C. Alphonso Smith, of the faculty of the University of North Carolina, had been offered the chaiy'of English at Cornell Universm. Dr. Smith says in re gard to the report that he has not made any attempt to secure the po sition, aud has never been approach ed on the subject. The rumor cur rent in Charlotte is without foun dation so far as he is concerned. The students and faculty are glad to learn that the statement that Dr. Smith is contemplating 'leaving the University is a mistake. Later" reports stated that Dr. Lawson had contracted with the Trenton, N. J., athletes. Dr. Lawson denies both of these reports and states further that he will play .10 more professional ball.
