Widespread interest is being taken in this country and abroad in the International Congtess On Tuberculosis which is to be held in Washington next September under the auspices of the National Asso ciation for the Study and Preven tion of Tuberculosis. The gathering- will be unique in several re spects. It will be the first con gress of the sort to be held in this country, and it will differ from the earlier Congress in giving greater prominence to the non-medical as pects of the campaign against the white plague.' The outlook will cover the anti-tuberculosis move ment as a whole, and emphasis will be laid upon the humanitarian and social factors of the problem as well as upon the-medical, surgical and pathologicalaspectsof.it. Ben. The truest and blue-bloodedest philosopher of them all is Ben, the canine quadruped that basks in the sunlight in the immediate vicinity of Commons Hall. And though we have never seen in him some of the traits of Diogenes, he is, in our private opinion, a worthy descendant of his distinguished prototype. Ben is the property of Mr. Dickson, and Ben never gets excited. Ben takes evertyhing as it is, he never questions the existing order of things, and he never gets in a hurry. If he were to remember a pressing engagement at which he was fifteen minutes overdue, he would conde scend to no more than a gentle trot. We saw him once when such was the case and his tail wagged from side to side. Think not for a moment, however, that we would accuse Ben of being lazy far from it. But Ben is fat, and we have an idea that he has reasons quite sufficient for not becoming hasty. In addition to being a philosopher and fat, Ben is an aristocrat. He holds no converse with dogs of meauer .degree, and few people there are who are honored ' with so much as a glance from his wise old eye. it is possoie that tnis appar ent hateur is due to preoccupation, but again we have an idea that he considers almost all dogs and people beneath his notice. And we have spent hours wondering what would happen if a common mortal attempted to pat him on the head, or if a common dog attempted to rub noses with him. Ben wouldn't bite, neither would he bark but that cold look of contempt and injured dignity causes, even in the contemplation thereof, cold chills to chase each other up and down our spinal column. Ah, Ben, we respect and honor thee. Thou art full of years, and must take the long journey that all must take, but may thou be long in the starting! If you are fond of contrasts, take a look at that ferocious, nervous bit of dog-flesh, Nero, the property of Mr. Gooch, the telephone man.
