THE DEBATE.
In the second annual debate be
tween the University of North Car
olina and the University of Vir
ginia, which was held in Richmond
Friday night, Messrs. J. T. John
ston and J. W. Hester won for Car
olina a most glorious vie- . "
tory. Says the Richnion 1
Times-Dispatch: "By
the vote of Richmond
judges the University of
North Carolina won the
honors in the debate
with the University of
Virginia at the Jefferson
Hotel Auditorium, the
decision meeting with
the hearty approval of
the audience. Picking
a subject with which
the average person was
not familiar, the speak
ers handled it intelli
gently and showed the
results of careful study
ing and oratorical train
ing. The question, 'Re
solved, That nationa
banks should be al
lowed to issue, subject
to tax and governmen
tal supervision, 'notes on
their general assets,'
was ably discussed by
both sides. Carolina
having the negative r
and Virginia the affirmative."
Virginia's representatives were
Messrs. George W. Fry and S.
Clay Williams. They acquitted
themselves with credit to them
selves and to Virginia. Both were
handsome, large-framed men and
made a fine appearance on the plat
form. Carolina's representatives,
Messrs. Johnston and Hester, are
members of the Junior and Senior
classes respectively. This was Mr.
Johnston's first debate but he ac
quitted himself like an old stager.
His speech was clear, elaborate and
convincing, and was delivered with
the greatest care and composure.
Mr. Hester has been in several de
bates before but he crowned them
all by his splendid effort in Rich
mond Friday night. By his stump
speaking style he won the crowd
from the start and ended his peror
ation amid tremendous applause.
Mayor McCarthy of Richmond
gracefully presided over the debate;
Mr. George Miller, Jr., of Virginia
and Mr. T. L. Simmons of Caro
lina were the time keepers; and Mr.
W. E. Yelverton of Carolina acted
as marshal. The Times Dispatch

For weeks the students at the
University and the fans through
out the State had looked forward
to this great contest between the
rival universities. A hard-fought,
close game ws expected, but no
one was prepared for the magnifi-

team so strong that odds as high

The matter seemed simple
enough, but unexpected complica

on the part of some of the members
that inasmuch as tennis was under
the control of the Tennis Associa

The Guilfordites Show That They
Have Some More Like
Hobbs.
Guilford showed Saturday after
noon at Greensboro that the loss of
Hobbs behind the bat was not ir
reparable, for she did the goose-egg
stunt to Carolina and sent four of
her own men across the rubber.
The playing of the Carolina team
was not up to the standard. Much
disappointment was expressed by
the fans and the fear that Carolina
' would not recuperate
for the Virginia game
caused the odds to go
up in favor of the
Orange and Blue.
Guilford started the
merry-go-round in the
first inning by scoring
three men, and though
Carolina had a good
chance to score in the
sixth, Guilford was
never in real danger
of losing the game.
The additional run was
made in the ninth.
Stewart for Carolina
pitched a good game,
but his support was
bad, Carolina getting
credit for six errors on
the score book. Price
for Guilford likewise
did good pitching and
had excellent support,
Guilford making only
one error. Stewart
struck out 8 men and
allowed 7 hits; Price
- struck out 5 men and
allowed 6 hits.
