Carolina had shown up exceptionally well in the Cornell game, and until the Guilford game the hopes of the North State fans ran high. But when Carolina went down to the tune of 4 to 0 many lost hope hence the big odds. Not so with the students. The majority felt confident of victory, though Virginia's run in the first and her good chance in the fifth caused a mighty sinking of hearts. The Gate City had on its holi day attire and the inhabitants turned ont to see the game and to give the students a good time. And the G. F. and Normal girls "God bless 'em," said many a Car olina boy went to see the game and caused the grand-stand to be come a beauty show of the first order, for White and Blue and a pretty girl make a wonderful com bination. Long before Umpire Holt called "Play!" the grand-stand and bleachers were filled to overflow, ing and the crowd began crowding along the side lines and around the fence in the outfield. At three thirty the. Carolina players trotted on the field, the umpire gave the signal, and the fight was on. Fount ain flies out to short, Ham singles to center, steals second. Fully fans. Cole knocks a long fly to center, who muffs, and Ham scores. Gieat excitement. In the third Virginia is retired in one, two, three order. James and Monty get free passes and are sac rificed to second and third by Hobbs. Redely singles to right and James scores.
