Carolina has won the victory in a
debating contest, this time with her
long-time rival Georgia. There be
those who say that the University
of North Carolina attaches too little
importance to this form of inter
collegiate contest, that entirely too
much thought is given to athletics.
We wonder upon what grounds
these wiseacres will base such say
ings now. Four intercollegiate de
bates in one year, to say nothing of
numerous intersociety contests, is
by no means a small dose, and when
our boys win three out of the four
it seems to indicate that the debat
ing status of our University is not
being lowered, despite the fact we
get out a baseball team and a foot
ball team and a track team.
T?he debate Friday night was in
teresting. The Georgia nien-
who, by the way, seemed to be fine
fellows, for they took their defeat
as gracefully as the most exacting
could expect came to Chapel Hill
loaded for bear and seemed determin
ed to carry a pelt back with them.
But others wre likewise loaded for
bear. Rand and Tillett showed
that they had studied the question
thoroughly and knew whereof they
spoke. And though the contest was
exceedingly close, the balance lean
ed toward the Tar Heels, and all
loyal supporters of the White and
Blue rejoiced.
In the death of Professor Joshua
Walker Gore the University of
North Carolina has lost one of her
most loyal friends. He gave twenty-six
of the best years of his life
to the University and in that time
he won the love of his fellow mem
bers of the faculty and of a host of
students who came under his influ
ence. ,
'Prof. Gore was a perfect gentle
man, a Christian, and one of the
best instructors in the faculty. His
going, though not unexpected; has
left a vacancy that will never be
filled and a sadness in the hearts of
many that years cannot efface.
Chief Ball Manager Orr tells us
that as matters now stand he can
not estimate with any accuracy the
amount of the receipts at Com
mencement, and consequently he is
puzzled as to how , much money to
spend. It is urgently desired that
those who intend to stay for Com
mencement should help him.
Carolina Intercollegiate Debates.
The Georgia debate ended Caro
Una's 12th year of successful de
bating. During that time she has
met the University of Georgia,
Vanderbilt University Johns Hop
kins University, Washington &
Lee, George Washington Univer
sity, the University of Vir
ginia, and the University of Penn
sylvania,
In the past collegiate year de
spite the fact that four strong op
ponents were met North Carolina
won three victories, losing to Penn
sylvania by a vote of two to one.
Of the total of twenty two debates
Carolina has won 16; and of the six
lost only 3 were lost by a unani
mous decision. Following is the

The Fresh-Soph debate will be
held on the night of April 24. The
query is, "Resolved, That the merg
ing of the cotton mills of the South
into one corporation would promote
the industrial interests of ,the
South." The Phi's representatives,
Messrs. J. A. McKay and J. A.
Highsmith, will defend the affirm
ative, and the Di's representatives,
Messrs. C. R. Wharton and A. H.
Wolfe, will defend the negative.
