1 APRIL MAGAZINE BEST YET. (Continued from page 1.) fully as far. "Roses" leaves a bad taste; there is an unpleasant sugges tion to it which had better been left off even at the cost of the finish it now has. The expression and sen timent in "What Determines" is good. "Le Roi est Mort Vive le Roi" aud "Porta Mortis" have as seen from their titles the idea of Death for the foundation. Both are passably done, but would have looked as well under English names "A Spring Song" struck the most rospousive note to our heart. No body can blame that nigger, "Dat gyardinin' kin wait". The sketches are unusually num erous and excellently well done. It will be no easy job to pick the prize winner. The exchange department is the ' best that I have seen in any college magazine. Certain of our cavilling friends will let us alone in the future. On the whole the April Magazine merits the high position given it among "Best Ten". P. Sophs Defeat Lawyers. .." In an exciting game of baseball Monday afternoon the Sophomores defeated the Lawyers by a score of 17 to 16. The game was chock full of errors and three-baggers and . home runs. The Lawyers had an easy time until the eighth, but in this inning, with the score 16 to 9 against them the Sophs began to get in their heavy batting; and brought their score up to 13. In the ninth they continued their work, and when Maupin knocked a swift one that went through two or th ree Lawyers and allowed- him to circle the bags, the Soph rooters went wild. Brinson for the Lawyers pitched good ball, fanning" ten men, but his support was poor. Batteries: Brinson and Gay lord; Sloan, Livermore, and Maupin, Um pire, Jas, A. Gray, Jr. The University Sermon. Reverend Kenneth Pfhbl, pastor of the Christ Moravian Church of Salem, preached the University ser mon for April Sunday night in Ger rard Hall. The speaker held the close attention of a good-sized audi ence. He is yet a young man, hav ing graduated here in '98. How ever, he is a forceful and interesting speaker. His voice is strong, and his enunciation is clear. The text for the sermon was taken from the eighteenth verse of the first chapter of Colossrans: That in all things he might have the preeminence. The speaker said in substance: The study of life is the most in teresting of all things. Every where it is constantly before us in one or all of its great phases. As we look at life today it appears in endless confusion. It is like a ves sel at sea drifting aimlessly with every wind. But such is not life; life has a definite purpose. If we could understand life, if we could understand that in all this endless confusion there is a definite system! Is it possible that the God who placed all things here could have left us groping in the dark. No, He has revealed it to us in His book. The great conception of life is that Christ should be preeminent in all things. With the realization of this con ception comes a great responsibili ty, the responsibility of being in harmony with the great God-pur pose- There is no limit to the pur pose. Look back 1900 years and see its transforming power. Go back to Nhazareth and see the cat penter lay aside his hammer and go on his great world mission, see him lay the foundation ' ot a church, and then trace the influence of the Church moving and transforming all things, making Christ preeminent. Are we going to help in this pur pose? If we do we will have the consciousness of being in harmony with the Infinite. If actuated by high motive we indentifv ourselves with and lose ourselves in this pur pose we join hands with God and become laborers together with Him. Track Meet. Saturday afternoon, at three o'clock, the track meet with Wake Forest College will be pulled off, weather permitting and that means unless it is actually raining. Prom comparative records, we ought to win, and the finals showed that the team will do its share. What it wants from the boys is some little support. Come out every body has twenty-five cents and help stir up some real interest in track athletics. , The track is poorly situated, and you will have to stand up, and move around, but so will the men on the team. The following is the probable list of entries: 100 yard dash, Davis, J., and Rutzler, G. 220 yard dash, Rutzler, G., and Davis, J., or Philips. 440 yard run, Bridgers and Rutz ler, L. 880 yard run, Bridgers and Eve rett. 1 mile run, Shaw and Lyle. High hurdles, Phillips and Coop er. Low Hurdles, Phillips and Coop er. Running high jump, Singletary and Williams, D. Running Broad Jump, Singletary and Williams, D. Standing Broad Jump, Singletary and Phillips or Cooper. . Shot Put, Thompson and .Deans. Hammer Throw, Thompson, Deans and Ruffn. Pole Vault, Eames and Cramer. Only two men can be entered in each event, so where three names are given, the choice is not yet final. The one request we have to make of the boys is that they keep off the track and out of the way of all con testants. Get on the inside of the track, if you want to, but once there, stay there! Nothing wor ries a man more than . the fear of too little room. There will be room for most of 'ou, but it is im possible for everybody to see as well as everybody else. .
