The Ministry of Poetry.
(Continued from first page.)
land in her attempt to better the
conditions of the children in her fac
tories.
The third and last phase in the
ministry of poetry is that of restitu
tion. The poet takes the dead cus
tom, deeds, and men of the past and
vitalizes them. In this respect the
power of the poet approaches the in
finite. No man in the world could
by any means have done for the his
tory of Scotland what Burns and
Scott have done with their poetry
and romance. Even historians turn
to Chaucer to get the conditions of
the fourteenth century. Today
Paul Revere is better known than
almost any other man in our history
and all he did was to attract the
attention of a poet. We hear a
great deal these days of undeveloped
resources of the South. The re
source that needs development is her
past history full of romance and
chivalrous men.

! University Sermon
The University Sermon for" 'Feb
ruary was preached by G. T. Rowe,
of AshviHe, last Sunday night.
Mr. Rowe preached on the subject
"The spirit of Man is the Candle of
the Lord." In a well thought out
talk he treated the subjective side of
religion, giving the object of the
spirit in man to be keeping in touch
with the larger one of God. Salva
tion then, thinks Mr. Rowe, is the
matter of keeping the God within
in connection with the God without.
At the last meeting of the Histor
ical Society Dr. Kemp P. Battle
read a memoir on the life of Charles
W. Harris, the first professor of
Mathematics in this University, and
the second presiding professor.
The sources of the memoir were
letters of Professor Harris in the
posession of the society. After
leaving the University professor
Harris settled at Halifax, and had
a brilliant start as a layweri but his
career was cut short by pulmonary
consumption. He was a very able
and accomplished man a first honor
graduate of Princeton.
