In this respect the power of the poet approaches the in finite. No man in the world could by any means have done for the his tory of Scotland what Burns and Scott have done with their poetry and romance. Even historians turn to Chaucer to get the conditions of the fourteenth century. Today Paul Revere is better known than almost any other man in our history and all he did was to attract the attention of a poet. We hear a great deal these days of undeveloped resources of the South. The re source that needs development is her past history full of romance and chivalrous men. At the close of Dr. Smith's address Mr. Cox dismissed the au dience by thanking- it and Dr. Smith for their aid to the celebration. Rowe has been holding services-at the M. E. Church eve nings this Week. Mrs. Clay tor visited her son Rob Sunday. ! University Sermon The University Sermon for" 'Feb ruary was preached by G. T. Rowe, of AshviHe, last Sunday night. Mr. Rowe preached on the subject "The spirit of Man is the Candle of the Lord." In a well thought out talk he treated the subjective side of religion, giving the object of the spirit in man to be keeping in touch with the larger one of God. Salva tion then, thinks Mr. Rowe, is the matter of keeping the God within in connection with the God without. At the last meeting of the Histor ical Society Dr. Kemp P. Battle read a memoir on the life of Charles W. Harris, the first professor of Mathematics in this University, and the second presiding professor. The sources of the memoir were letters of Professor Harris in the posession of the society. After leaving the University professor Harris settled at Halifax, and had a brilliant start as a layweri but his career was cut short by pulmonary consumption.
