To go all this time without the excite ment of inter-collegiate athletics or the fore-showing of examinations will be a curious experience for some of us. (Aside we might whisper, that, to spend the Christmas hollida;s with the shadow of examinations ever growing denser and nearer, will be another curious experience, very curious.) However, this coming month ought to prove a blessing for at least one por tion of the students here. The basket ball enthusiasts should glow at the thought. Heretofore there has been no chance whatever for basketball to become the absorbing sjxrt of the day. Now that the time has come for bas ket ball to shine it is the fault of those who love the game if something is not done. The football squad no longer are the heroes of the campus. Every one cannot play tennis. No one can persuade himself to bone' away the evening"" when every thing out doors seems so absolutely inviting. There is no reason why the little plot of ground reserved for basketball . should not be covered every afternoon with the ever-shifting group of players all deep in earnest. It adds a great deal to the zest of any sport if the side lines are black with spectators. Now is the time, if ever, that we will be glad to look on at one game of basket ball. work as hard at practice as the foot ball men do. Make basketball a live wire or get out of the way. The ten nis association needs that ground. If basketball is simply a hobbv to be spasmodically indulged in during few weeks it has no place in univer sitv life. It will have to stand aside and let tennis occupy the ground Tennis is on the rise. Unless basket ball rets a hustle on. it will have to make way. When we want some water real bad ly and start to the well after it, it is discout aging to see some dirty negro washing his mouth in the dipper. It does seem, that as few negroes as there are necessary on the campus that some other means might be found for giving them water than to allow them to drink trom the same dipper which all the. students must use. We had as soou have a negro eat out of our plate or sleep in our bed. Who wants to think, when he goes to drink from the college dipper, that those same germs which lately crawled upon a negro's gums will soon be feasting on mine. As a university combines all forms of learning so must a university be representative of every form of sport. Men come here who do not care to study the classics. For their benefit the scientific department is maintain ed. Men come here who do not care for science. For them the language departments are open, A man may get any kind of education he wants The same should be true in athletics. At present we are represented in four of the great branches of American sport but the fifth is entirely neglect ed. We put out teams in football, baseball, track and tennis, but basket ball is coldly shunned. There are men here, many of them, who do not care for any of the forms of exercise we have. Why not work up basketball then, and give these men another chance? Basketball has been experi' mented on a little. - But if we are go ing to introduce the game dont let's have any half way accomplishments. This way of a few going out once a month in citizen'sclothes will never turn out a basketball team. If we want a team we have got to train for it and University Sermon Rev. Neal Anderson, of Winston S.ilem, delivered the university sermon for this month in Chapel Sunday night. Mr. Anderson spoke in the Presbyterian church Sunday morning and the large audience in chapel was alive in the expectancy of a fine ser mon. No one left disappointed! The text of Mr. Anderson's remarks was John 5, 1-10. He first pointed out the fact that the clause concerning the angels coming down was not in the Greek text. This, he said, relieved him of a grave doubt of the occurrence. Many men say that the supernatural must be cut out of religion. If you take the supernatural element out of Christianity you have no Christianity left. They are inseparably bound to- trether. What then are the miracles of the Bible? Miracle is the transla tion of four Greek words; signs, power, works, wonders. I should define a miracle as an event in the physical worli that can be explained in no other way than the. immediate volition of God for a moral or spiritual end. A miracle cannot be the outcome of phy sical causation. We are met with the ob jection that the volition of God con flicts with the laws of nature. Did you ever think what the laws of nature are? A law is a formula for the way in which forces are known to operate, and they merel) indicate God's plan of action. A miracle would be impossi ble without these laws. We are prone to consider the law and not the law given. Who shall say that the maker of the law shall not cause that law to show certain peculiarities. The days of miracles have passed because the need of them has passed. Miracles have a spiritual and a moral purpose. They do not happen sporadically. There have been three periods of the miracle and each has marked an advance in moral consciousness. The difficulty with us is not in believing in the mira cle but in the nature of a true God be hind them. If we admit a personal God the miracle becomes almost natur al. If Jesus Christ came to save the world by his power it was most natural that he should do so thru the miracle.
