Frank Caveny Company gave a good show Friday night. As a chalk talker, clay modeller, impersonator, and humorist, Caveny made himself popular. In the program of old song's, Mrs. Caveny's low soprano delighted every one. During the past few seasons, Alton Packard and Ross Crane have both appeared here in entertainments of the same sort, but neither succeeded belter in pleasing his audience. The crayon work of Caveny himself was the feature of attraction; he an nounced himself in the beginning as a chalk-talker and as such he made good. He connected the impression that he was a born artist by portraying him self at the early age of ten months, when he was able to draw but one thing, liquid refreshment from his morning bottle. His rapidly executed transformation from one subject to something far different attracted the admiration of his audience. With a few quick strokes, he changed the cracked water pitcher of the platform orator into a crack base-ball pitcher. He attempted a caricature of some person in the audience, but did not" succeed wry well with it. His more serious work was very well leceived. The winter landscapes, summer sunsets and marine scenes were artistically done. He talked as he chalked and with his repertoire of new jokes and poems, he kept his hear ers in one continuous laugh. Caveny has a number of good ideas for his sort of entertainment and carried them out rapidly and well. Mrs. Caveny's low, well modulated soprano made her a general favorite. Her operatic selections were chosen well within the range ot her voice. She pleased most however as a singer of simple, familiar songs. A few old Southern melodies were illustrated by her husband as she sang them. The clay modelling had to be cut short because of the lack of suitable light arrangements. . Carolina's Glorious Record in Debate Out of twenty-seven debates in which Carolina has participated during the past thirteen years, she has wort nineteen. Carolina has a majority out of every series into which she has en tered. She has encountered teams from some of the greatest universities in the country and has defeated them. No institution has been too mighty to be our foe, and no foe has been too strong to be our victim. In athletics Carolina teams have met with varying success, victory coming as often a's de feat; but in forensic contests, success has almost always been with us. In no phase of student activity has the University attained the prominence which her debating record gives her. Reverend Neal Anderson speaks at chapel Treasurer of Athletic Association reports College life has a great many activi ties: the lecture room, the campus, the athletic field all make their demands upon the student, and contribute to his mental and physical development. And we are glad to see that the University has encouraged another phase of stu dent life: dramatics. Two years ago the Dramatic Club gave us a splendid representation of the Rivals, the Eng lish classic, l?st year the Cercle Fran cais appeared in the greatest French Comedy: Le Medecin Malgre Lui, this year we are to be treated to a favorite of the Spanish stage, the Indian. This famous work of ; the renowned Garcia de la Vega, was translated into Eng lish by R. Diez de la Cortina, Sujerin tendent of Instruction in the Republic of Argentine, and this translation will be used. The members of the Drama tic Club who. presented so successfully the Hero of the Gridiron and the mem bers of the Cercle Francais have com bined for the occasion and will ? give this play this coming Thursday, 2nd of December. . . The rehearsals , promise an artistic and most pleasant evening. The play ers have worked most faithfully; the' dramatic traditions in this college. The scene of the play is laid in Spain and ;t is the aim of the management to reproduce the customs and costumes of the country in their least details. No pains will be spared to make the evening a real treat to the literary au dience. The tickets will soon be offer ed for sale, and seats may be reserved next Monday at Eubank's drug store. Chapel exercises on Monday were conducted by Rev. Neal Anderson. His talk was interesting and beneficial. He said that a marvelous growth had taken place in North Carolina, and that there was a field of unlimited op portunities for the young men of the State. The speaker said that he did not come to ask us how to succeed in a State, rich in the promise of the fu ture, but that he came to ask us what constituted success. And the one thought which Mr. Anderson said he wished to leave with us was: "No man succeeds in life who falls below his highest ideal. A man may make money, may win honors but he will not succeed unless he has the seal of God's approval." On Tuesday the President conducted chapel exercises. He read the 15th Psalm which gives, he said, an excel lent definition of a Christian gentle man. In his talk Dr. Venable spoke again of the importance and magni tude of the present crisis. Emphasiz ing the fact that the burden of the debt must fall upon the students. Dr. Venable said that the crisis did not mean the mere payment of the debt, but that the very existence of a track team and baseball team next spring and even the football next fall, was at stakei Mac.
