SOPH-JUNIOR DEBATE
MESSRS. J. A. McGOOGAN AND L.
N. JOHNSON WIN FOR PHI.
Messrs. I. C. JNoser and W. J. Hen-
drixs represent l)i on question
woman's suffrage
Principle vs. expediency was the
keynote of i lie inter-society soph-junior
debate, . held in Gerrard Hall Fri
day night on woman suffrage for the
United States, between L. N. John
son, '12, and J; A. McGoogan, '11, af
firmative, of the Philanthropise society
and YV. F. Heiidrix, '12, and I. C.
Moses, '11, negative, of the Dialectic
society. The organic argument' ad
vanced by the affirmative caused the
judges, Professor A. II. Patterson,
Professor P. H. Winston, and Profes
sor M. C. S. Noble to decide, two to
one, "That woman should be allowed
to exercise the right of suffrage in the
United States." :': . V
The argument advanced by the affir
mative was a unit which centered
around the propositions that de mocra
tic government in its nature is an out
growth of the needs of th? governed,
that those directly affected by the gov
ernment should have a voice in its di
rection, that woman today exerts a
vital influence upon and is directly af
fected by the government of the Uni
ted States and accordingly should
have the privilege of the ballot. The
negative sought to establish dynami
cally that in the interests of efficient
government the polls should be denied
to women. They sought to detach
the argument from a basic principle
and put it on a footing of practical ad
visability. L. N. Johnson, of the sophomore
class, led off for the; affirmative. He
outlined the argument of the affirma
tive, giving most attention to the re
lation of the individual to democratic
government. He followed . govern
ment thru three stages, first the ab
solute monarchy, second, the limited
monarchy, the monarchy ruling with
certain advising and restricting bod
ies, third, modern democracy, the gov
ernment by the majority for the ser
vice of the people. And in each of
these periods he showed the gradual
ascendancy of woman. In the tribal
stage she was mere property. Bit by
bit she was liberated from the exis
tence of the mere household slave; bit
by bit, she obtained recognizance in
the various activities of religion and
industry hitherto restricted to the
stronger sex; until today she occupies
her present glorious position in Amer
ican life. At this point he left off, de
pending upou his colleague to carry
the argument on to its logical conclus
ion. I Mr. W. F. Hendricks, who spoke
lirst for the negative, argued that the
fate of woman suffrage should be de
cided upon its merits as a force,
strengthening and making more effi
cient the government of our nation.
His ideal for the government of the
American people was neither an abso
lute monarchy, nor pure democracy,
which he stated is rank socialism, but
rather the golden mean between the
two, the practical working model of
American democracy. The strength
of a o-overmnent depends upon strength
and "intelligence of its voters. Man
