Officially he was Professor of Greek, Superviscv of the Library, and Dean of the Univer sity; personally he was the helpful friend of his colleagues, the students, the alumni, and of many others in his wide range of acquaintance who seem ed to need his help. But in no one of his acts was there lacking the charm of his personality. In response to the demands constant ly made upon him from so many vari ed sources, he freely gave his learn ing, his culture, his wise counsel, and a large store of valuable information. He gave himself. His rare intellectual gifts, support ed by habits of rigid discipline and by an ever-ready spirit of helpfulness, as sured his work of success. And so,' whatever he undertook to do, he did thoroughly and well, as student, teach er, foreign minister, counselor, I'rivml, and citizen. The University laments the l.-ssof this gifted and faithful friend. It misses him in many departments in which he wrought so effectively. It misses his inspiring presence and his kindly courtesj But we rejoice to know that his influence still lives in the high ideals which he gave to Uni versity life. His work is an enduring monument. With those who knew him best and loved him best we join in doing honor to his memory and we offer them re spectfully our sympathy in our common loss.' ' : .: March 18th. 1910. W. D. Toy, E. K.
