TENNIS TOURNEY BEGINS Continued from first page. dispensed with this spring in defer ence to baseball, college tennis here has continued with the same vim that marked its rapid progress last fall. Every pretty afternoon sees energetic, sometimes brilliant play on the courts. And the playing on the whole is of a much higher grade than formerly. Plans are being completed now for he construction of four other courts directly in line with the eight new. ones, and directly south of the Carr Building in linewith.its southwest corner, leaving a roading. between the, two sets of courts. With the comple tion of these Carolina will rankwith the topmost in , southern collegiate tennis. . PITTSBURG VS. DETROIT Continued from first page. executed bunt to pitcher's box. Ed monds' aggressiveness in sprinting around the bases was exceeded only by the remarkable control exhibited by Stacy at the time just prior to his tri umphal withdrawal from the firing line when out of fifteen pitches he had not thrown a strike. Indeed the first thirty minutes of Stacy's inning were probably the most thrilling part of the game. One admirer was heard loudly offering 2 to 1 that he would not walk over 19 men. Theodore Roosevelt Ichabod was umpire. With his coo brain and gigantic wad of chewing to bacco he succeeded in handing out a deal consistently raw to both parties. A. Horny Wolfe.insinuated'himself in to the good graces of the Pirate chief tan and was allowed to pitch the last inning, wherin he shined his reputa tion by allowing only 12 runs.. Mc uoogan ot woman suttrage lame was scorer for the first three hours, at the end of which time he gave in to the persistent entreaties of A. Rufus Mor gan and resigned in the latter's favor Owing to an unexplainable paucity of real F. F. The first score stood Pittsburg (6)4 to Detroit (7) Pittsburg has been challenged by the Ministerial club, whose club name is the Philanthropic Looters. The member of the Looters who extended the challenge to to the Pirate mana ger was heard to remark Monday after noon, 'I'll be darned if we . don't show you fellows something." Line-up. The bishop was assisted in the services by Rev. Mr. Hogue of Chapel Hill, Rev. Mr. Graffit of New York, and Rev. Mr. Atkinson of Elon College. The hall was well filled by an audience al most entirely of students. The sing ing was magnificently rendered by a choir of some four hundred male voic es. ' Bishop Rondthaler's sermon was on the subject of strength, and strength breathed thru every sentence he utter ed. The man behind the sermon was the proper man.to deliver a sermon on strength of manhood. In a few words the sermon mierht be summed up as follows: "As the man is, so is his strength." Judges-. 8, 21. When God wishes to introduce into tne world a little more of godliness He chooses some individual as His mouthpiece. He picks out a strong man such as Moses or Paul. The strength of man, true manhood, does not consist in physical perfection or in aesthetic gift or in knowledge, or in will power, Faith is the secret of real manhood Faith is knowledge, feeling, will, all fused into one by the fire of the soul. Thru faith alone God comes into com munion with man. NORFOLK AND SOUTHERN RAILWAY Harry K. Walcott & Hugh M. Ken, Receivers. Norfolk Va., January 20tb, 1910 HAVE YOU BEEN OVER THE NEW BRIDGE?
