Most of the students have already tak en the treatment prescribed and are now permanently cured, and if there is a man in North Carolina who does not believe in the hookworm he could be firmly convinced by a talk with the students who have taken the treat ment at this college. s Horace Geyer, Jr., of Brooklyn, N. Y., has been elected captain of the University of Virginia foofball team to fill the vacancy made by the resig nation of "Ted" Bowen. The new leader of the 1910 Varsity has been a member of the Virginia football team for three years, playing right tackle on the famous '08-'09 team, and was elected at the end of the past season as the best man in his position, play- ing in South Atlantic Division foot ball. Continued from first pag). uslted when Dr. Stiles made known his discovery of the existence of. the hookworm and stated that a large per cent of the people of the South were infected. Many did not believe it then. A few do not believe it now. Howev er, before Dr. Stiles had made his lec tures throughout the country he had lectured at Wake Forest , and Dr. Ran. kin, the dean of the medical depart ment, made an examination of a large number of students and found that about 37 per cent" of those examined were infected with the hookworm. This-was about four years age, before the general censure of Dr. Stiles. About four weeks ago Dr. John Powers, dean of the medical depart ment, and Dr. E. E. Stewart, of the medical faculty, began an examination of the present student body. The stu dents have responded willingly to the investigation and have not been bash ful in the least, taking the stand that if they had the hookworm they wanted to get rid of it. Many are examined every day and it is hoped that every student can be examined before com mencetnent. When seen today Dr Powers refused to give the numbe: who were infected as he had promised several medical journals the numbe and their recapitulation by counties before he would give it to the press but stated that fifty per cent of those examined had the hookworm disease, Few or none of those who were raised in cities showed the least signs while a large proportion of the students from the counties ranging from Iredell and Davidson to Pasquotank were afflicted.
