To the students and athletic man
agement at the Virginia Polytechuic
Institute, we wish to express the sin
cerest thanks of the students of the
University of North Carolina for the
treatment accorded their representa
tives on the track team during the re
cent meet. The track athletes report
one of the most enjoyable times of
their life, in spite of their defeat.
We are printing- below portions of an
editorial which appeared in the latest
number of the student publication of
Washington and Lee University, Since
Carolina was not in a position to make
such a kick when Virginia won two
games from her we refrained from any
remarks on the subject. We may how
ever endorse the words of the follow
ing article, and since the main point is
not whether "Chapel Hill's" team is
fourth among Carolina colleges, we
shall not even ask which are the first
three.
the Republican ticket, or blaspheme
against mint-julip. It is part of our
religion. .
But having confessed to the essen
Jtials of the creed, there is just one lit
tie perplexity which we must needs un
burden on our brother editors. This
Southern championship is it double
barrelled, reversible, made-in-dupli
cate? Is it arrived at on the ' install
ment plan? Or has the Lambertine
genius actually evolved an improve
ment on the old system whereby Vir
ginia is enabled to win the Southern
championship once a day thruout the
season provided, of course, she wins
When, after winning the series from
Carolina press dispatches from Char
lottesville and College Topics proudly
proclaimed that Virginia now held the
Southern championship, altho Chape
Hill rauks probably third or fourth
among Carolina teams this year, not
to mentiou the rest of the South, we
were not surprised. But when a few
days later College Topics, and the
press dispatches sitnultaneosly an
nounced that Virginia would play
Georgetown to decide the champion
ship of the South (Georgetown having
won two games out of twenty odd
played this season, if our records are
correct and having lost the right to
claim the championship of Washing
ton city, not to mention Maryland),
then the demon of intellectual honesty
awoke to torment us. How can thi
be? Never since first we encountered,
"How old is Ann?" have we wrestled
with so baffling a problem!
Meanwhile having won decisively
from Holy Cross, which for the past
several years has been ranked at the
top in college baseball, why shall not
Washington and Lee claim the whole
darn inter-collegiate championship
right now while the season is young
and before we lose any more games?
Ring Turn Phi.
The "Southern Championship" is a
strange
sort of a thing if it is a
"thing" at all. Some how, strive as
we may to gain a clear conception of
what, when and how it is, it always
eludes us and escapes in a dense mist
of comparative scores. Of course,
every infant knows it is a special per
quisite of the University of Virginia,
and no doubt that is as it should be,
tho even in this misgivings sometimes
assail us. The Southern Championship
may be best defined, indeed, as what
Virginia claims whenever an athletic
team wearing the orange and blue wins
half the games played during the sea
son. When Virginia does not win one
half her games, counting in prep schools
and "colleges having fewer than one
hundred and fifty matriculates," then
the S. C does not pass to some other
institution, which has made a better
record, as an ignorant foreigner might
imagine. Of course not! It simply
ceases to exist for the time being. It
is relegated to the limbo of innocuous
desuetude until the next time Virginia
gets a fairly decent, mediocre team on
which to base her claim.
Of course, as we have said, this is as
it should be. We were raised on it.
We imbibed it in our youth along with
the almanac and the catechism and wc
would no more think of questioning
the divine prerogative of Virginia to
"adopt" a schedule, consisting of Randolph-Macon,
Hampden Sidney, Wood
berry Forest and the Charlottesville
high school, and then claim the champ
ionship on the strength of winning
from Woodberry and the high school,
than we would eat with a nigger; vote

inai win De almost as ciose as it was
last year. At present the junior team
has the best hold, having won three
games and lost none. They have won
from the seniors, lawyers, and fresh
men. The seniors and freshmen have
each won one and lost one. The soph
omores have won their only game, de
feating the lawyers. The teams of
the professsonal classes seem to be in
a bad way, neither having won a game.
