1 t With Other Colleges. In a recent issue of College Topics, appears the following: With the election this week of Char lie Crawford to coach the football team for the next year and "Pop" Geyer to captain the eleven, prospects for suc cess next fall have been greatly boost ed, and the fact that Virginia will have a winning team to uphold her claim to pre-eminence in the South now borders upon certainty. The leading colleges of Virginia hold an annual oratorical contest in which each college participating is represented by one speaker. South Carolina colleges also engage in a con test of this kind. The following notice is taken from the "Ring Turn Phi" of Washington and Lee: On last Wednesday evening at eight o'clock, in ''Wash" Hall, a preliminary contest was held and a representative chosen to represent Washington ' and Lee in the annual state oratorical con test which is to be held at Emory and Henry College sometime in May. Mr. Heavener with an oration on "The United States, a World Power," won the decision and with the good show ing made here should stand a good chance to win out in the final contest. The colleges and universiites forming the State Oratorical Association are: Washington and Lee-University, Em ory Und Henry, Randolph-Macon, Richmond, William and Mary, and Roanoke Colleges, and University of Virginia. In an address before the students of the University of Kansas, April 29, Ambassador James Bryce made a strong plea for the humanistic studies and for habits of sound and exact thinking. This extract is taken from a news re port of the address: It was not only the applied sciences. Mri Bryce thought, that ought to be provided for, such as agricultural chemlsty and engineering, but also the theoretic Sciences, such as chemistry and physics and biology. There is an even greater danger today in all countries, in Europe as well as in America, of neglecting the literary or humanistic subjects such as philosophy and history and philology. Therefore, the; ambassador said, he would remind the students that in their college years they had to prepare themselves- not only for , their special vocation in' life, be it commercial or professional, but also for life itself. They must learn to love, literature and history; they must learn to think about those great things which had occupied the human mind in the past and were treated of in the works of the most famous men of older days. ; Let them never be afraid to spend time on stud ies which seem remote from our times. From the ancient writers of Greece and Rome, from the great poets of later times, such as Dante and Shakes peare and Milton, there was still to be gathered such fruit as does not grow on any trees today. "Three-fourths of the mistakes that a man . makes are made because he doesn't really know the thing he thinks he knows," s.iid the ambassador. The habit of sound and careful and independent thinking, he went on to say was the best intellectual quality a young man could start in his journey through ltfej j; "That, and the! -love of truth, are what a university ought to - .teach." , ;.y : . "LONDON ASSURANCE" Continued from first page, sought to make his fancy vest remain down in its proper place was praise- wormy. Everybody made good fron Sir Har court Hartley to Pert, The necessi ties for promptings were few and far between, and at these times the assist auce was given with a dexterity that almost made the pause pass tor a scheduled breathing space. At times if became necessarv for one or two actors to gaze into the dressing room and to remark interestedly on the gradual approach of some fellow. At such time the said actors kept the con versation spicedly and containedly, al ways giving the approaching one full time to climb in thru the room win dow without tearing his train. The production of "London Assur ance" was the fruit of long practice and painstaking coaching, and Mr. Adolph Vermont may well congratu late himself on the success which his company attained.
