Lawson complains that some of candidates for the baseball team are loafing on him. We can't believe these men are quitters. They are well known in college and have not that reputation far from it. The trouble is in their attitude toward the job they are undertaking. They look up on the ball they play as amusement only. They do not appreciate the fact that the baseball team have their job cut out for them this spring and that hard work alone will land us in the lead at the end of the season. Always in the past decade have our baseball ceam won a good majority of their games. We remember with the greatest pleasure that last year's team was the southern championship holder. The student body looked upon this year's aggregation as prospectively better than the champions. It is undeniable, however, that our confi dence is being a little shaken by the preliminary practice. Next week, however, come two games. Both are with prep schools but neither school has any scruptes against using professional baseball players. So far as the students here canremember. we've never had a walk over with Oak Ridge. These two games give the teaman excellent op portunity to restore public confidence. But, you'll never do it by loafing. You men on the field must realize at once that you represent not only eight hundred students here and thousands of alumni over the country, but also that you are held responsible for a good record this year. If you were employed by a man to do some work for him. you wouldn't loaf on the job. Well, now you are employed by this university to do her honor by your work on the diamond. See to it that you make the task successful in its issue. With Other Colleges Among the various colleges which report especially good base-ball teams are Guilford and Wake Forest. The latter's team is said to be fast, with a strong infield composed largely of last year's placers. None of these players are professionals. Elon College played its first game for the season ou Monday, winning from Whitsett by a score of 9 to 3. Elon's battery is composed of Hearn andllobbs. Last week the young, ladies of the astronomy class at Peace Institute were conducted over to Wake Forest for the purpose of observing the stars and. the moon through Wake Forest's telescope. We never said that Wake Forest didn't have advantages. 'A recent issue of "The Crimson White" the college paper of University of Alabama was published by the co eds. The following issue published by the regular board contains a col umn of editorial paragraphs "drag ging" the co-editors generally. The dramatic clubs at the Univer sity of Virginia and at George Wash ington University are presenting their theatricals in several cities this spring. The Debating I lub at its meeting last evening adopted the following res olution as the opinion of the club in the question of commemorating the Harvard men who served on the Con federate side in- the Civil War. "Resolved: That it is the sense of this meeting that it is highly fitting and proper that Harvard should com memorate those of her sons who died in the Confederate service. . It is fur ther sense of the meeting that the nature of memorial and such inscrip tions as. may be appropriate shall be eft to the discretion of the Harvard Memorial Society." The Harvard Crimson. In the federal meet in Washington on February 19, Captain L. J. Martin, of the University of Virginia tracK team, ran the indoor 50-yard hurdles in 6 1-5 seconds, breaking the world's record held by. Forest Smithson, of Portland, Oregon, by one-fifth of a second. - Martin did this wonderful time in one f the heats, but in the finals he was handicapped six feet, and he finished only third. The record, it is understood will not be allowed owing to a mistake in the proper placing of the hurdle. " Alfred G. Vanderbilt has recently given $100,000 to Yale, bringing the total amount of his gifts up to $260,- 000. The seven West Point cadets who v were dismissed for "hazing" will in all probability be reinstated. During the coming, baseball season the Navy will start a system of grad uate coaching, as it has been deter mined to abolish professionals in this department. Practice commenced with a squad of forty candidates. ; The figures made public at Harvard recently show that there are more students there at present than last year. The total enrollment of the university is now 6,308, an increase of 125 over the enrollment of last year, Two styles of freshmen head gear are worn at Cornell a skull-cap, and in winter a toque. , Columbia has an endowment fund of $28,500,000. This is greater than any other school in the country. Lei Land Stanford is second, with $24,000, 000, and then follow Harvard, Chica go, Yale, Cornell and Pennsylvania. ; Eight men have been dropped from Amherst as a result of the recent ex aminations. If a student fails on more than halt of his studies he is required to resign from college. The Chapel Hill Insurance and Realty Co.
