' ''Entered as second-class matter October 26, li)09, at the post office at. Chapel Hill, N. C. under the Act of March 3, 1879." ; Printed by The University Press, Chapel Hill. Subscription Price, $1.50 per Year Payable in advance or during first term. Sinolr CoriRs 5 Cents One of the announcements made at the last meeting- of the athletic asso ciation was that Coach Cartmell had been signed for another year. The improvement that Carolina's track team has shown this year is of course lagely due to the work that the mem bers of the team themselves have done but if we had not had such an excel lent coach we do not believe that the men would have done such work. And so all of us, the student, and the faculty too, we believe, feel grate ful to Coach Cartmell for the work he has done here this year. He has not said much, never appearing at a. mass meeting or making himself conspicu ous on the track field, but he has worked. And that is the secret of the track team's success this spring. They have had a coach who attended strictly to his own affairs and who was not afraid of hard work. We are not only grateful to the coach for the work, he has done but we are more than pleased to know that he will be here again next year. Having worked so hard at the founda tions of a good track team this year we believe that next year he will be able to start the season without so many drawbacks as he had this spring. We look forward to the most success " ful track season Carolina has ever en joyed. This past year's track results have been the best we remember, next year's we expect to be still more bril liant. And we look upon Coach Cart mell as the keystone of it all. If this part of the ceremonies is to be a success it will be necessary that enough juniors remain on the Hill to represent the class of 1911. It wil hardly do for all the duties of the sen ior chiss to be placed in the hands o some few men who happen to be here and to be iuniors. Unless there is a respectable number of the class of 191 present the ceremony will be a failure One only has to stay a single day after the examination period to take part. It seems that practically every junior could afford to do that much for the sake of his class. SOPHS 4 FRESH 3 The sophs and fresh played for ten jnnings Monday afternoon in the pret tiest class game of the season. From the large number of spectators that thronged the sidelines one had thought varsity game in progress. The crowd was there to see the anuual class rush which takes place during the game. Ana the crowd was not disap pointed. The rush was fierce and asted thruout the game. The featuies of the srame were: the batting of Tillett and Temple for the reshmen and of Turlington and Cra ven for the sophomores. Both pitch ers worked well except in one or two innings. NORFOLK AND SOUTHERN RAILWAY Harry K Walcott & Hugh M. Ken, Receivers. Norfolk Va , January 20th, 1910 HAVE YOU BEEN OVER THE NEW BRIDGE? The passenger trains of the Norfolk and Southern Railway are now operated over the New Albemarle Sound bridge the longest continuous railway bridge over navigable waters in the world. The running time of trains Nos. 1, and 2, between all North Carolina points and Norfolk will be reduced one hour, cjoniiucnciiiK January 24th ." Last commencement there occurred an incident in the senior class day ex ercises that seemed of very little im portance yet we, believe it was indica tive of a forward step in one phase of the commencement ceremonies. When the senior exercises were neanng a close the juniors who were on the Hill collected around the Davie Poplar. When the seniors had finished their life as a class here, the president of the class formally turned over to the juniors present all the privaleges and the duties of a senior class at the University of North Carolina. Up to that time the senior exercises! had been, coming to a rather abrupt close. This little adds greatly to the smoothness of the ceremony. It fur thermore forms a sort of connection between the going and the coming classes. One does not feel that the university's life has been chopped off short and will not begin again until next September, but rather that the' life of the university goes on forever in spite of changing classes.
