This Week's ehapel j Professor Graham spoke Monday on the death of Dr. Alexander. lie pro nounced no eulogy, but simply told of Dr. Alexander's life and service to the University. He was a man de voted in class-room work; a man of courtesy and charm, and a man of that immortality which comes of putting- himself into the lives of others. Dr. Raper spoke on Tuesday and Wed nesday, describing- on the first day two scenes from British public life; and on the second day two scenes from Amer ican public life. A contrast between the life of the two nations was the purpose of the talks. The first scene taken from British life was that of a great meeting held in a public square in Oxford by anarchists. Dr. Kaper gave a vivid description of this meet ing- where, without the slightest inter ference' from the police, the anarchists preached their doctrine. During the same afternoon and on the same square, Y. M. C. A. workers held a meeting. The second scene was taken from the British Parliament. It was a picture of how in a committee of the whole, with perfect liberty of speech to every member, the House of Com mons formulated the revenue bill for the Empire. On Wednesday two similar yet rad ically different scenes from American political life were pictured. The first scene was that of an attempted meet ing by anarchists in Madison Square Garden, New York. The police im mediately interfered, and within twen ty minutes the leaders were in a patrol wajron. The second scene was laid in our Lower House. Dr. Raper told how a revenue bill is treated in that body; how it is referred to the Ways and Means Committee, composed of less than twenty men, before whom there is but little opportunity for open discussion; and how, when the bill is presented to the House, no one may speak save with the written permission of the Chairman of the Ways and means Committee. The House of Representatives is an absolute body of which Joe Cannon, bp reason of his unlimited power over committee ap pointments, is ruler. Our House . of Representatives is in reality the least democratic of all legislative bodies. Prof. Walker spoke for a few min utes Thursday on the public high school movement in the South and es pecially in this State. He said that this movement in the South is not an isolated one, but is a-part of a gener al movement that has been going- on in many nations of Europe. Prof. Walker outlined the extraordinary progress which the movement has made in North Carolina. Only a beginning- has been made, , however The constructive work must be done during the next decade, and for this work, men who are willing" to devote their lives are needed. An effort is beingf made by the Board of Education to put college graduates at the head of every high school in the State. On Friday Dr. Venable spoke on careless talking, the thoughtless crit icism and unkind repetition of something- that is derogatory to some one else. The tongue is an unruly mem ber, than which nothing- has ruined so many men. ' When tempted to speak of others, he-said, think to whom you speak, of whom you speak, when and where and why you speak. With Other Colleges Davidson has a junior oratorical contest at commencement in" which a medal is awarded to the best speaker. Davidson has fewer panics this sea son than usual. This is caused by a ruling-of the faculty which restricts the number of games to be played away from Davidson. At the A. and M. arrangement have been made between the students and the athletic committee allowing the students free tickets to all the A. and M. games plaved at Raleigh. In one of Guilford's interclass de bates Saturday night, three seniors were matched against three sopho mores. The seniors won the decision in spite of the fact that one of the sophs was a co-ed. College Topics d isc usses ed i tor i al ly the prevalence and cause of pink eye at the University of Virginia It is interesting to note that the cause as signed is eye strain from the poor lighting" system. It has come to such a pass, says the editor, that with the aid of one globe it is hardly possible to distinguish "a queen full from four of a kind". Virginia won the championship of the south in the relay race with Georgetown. (1 mile, time, 3m. 42.5s.) Dr. Henry Louis Smith recently de livered a lecture to the students of Davidson on the disciplining value of athletics. The following- is a news summary of t'.ie important; lessons which he said athletics taughtr "The value of loyalty, enthusiasm, and hopefulness; the fact that drudgery, unremitting- and persistent labor, is the price of efficiency and success; the value of distant aim and overmaster ing purpose; to abolish fickleness, overcome distaste nd fatigue in daily toil; that abstinence and self-control are necessary to strength, steady nerves, endurance, good judgement, and ultimate triumph; the value of prompt and willing obedience to skilled and competent authority; the Worth and importance of team work, self sacrifice for the common end, mutual trust and helpfulness, and the strength of unity." Manager Cheek of the Wake Forest baseball team has just published their schedule of twenty-three games. Wake Forest plays every other college in the state. Capt. Edwards, first-baseman has been carried to the Infirmary with measles. Trinity Park aff rded practice games for Trinity and A. and M. this week. Trinity won 10 to 0. A. and M. won 7 to 0.
