REUNION MEETING OF THE PHI,
SOCIETY
The reunion meeting of the Phi So
ciety last Saturday night was very en
joyable. There were not a great many
of the alumni present,' but among tne
few in the Hall feeling and remem
brances of former days ran high.
After the President had been elected
Capt. Howell, '60, was called on for a
soeech. Capt. Howell said, however,
that he had never learned to think
upon his feet, and so gracefully de
clined to sneak. Rev. Mr. bmitli, U,
was next called on. He responded in a
speech full of reminiscences or tne
past. This was the first time since
those dark days of Reconstruction that
he had revisited his alma mater. Mr
Smith told of the visit to Chapel Hil
of Andrew Johnston and Mr. Seward,
The latter consented to become an
honorary member of the Phi but when
at his initiation the president read mm
the usual oath to keep the secrets o
the society inviolate, Mr. Seward iiat-
lv refused to take it. t inally, now
ever, this difficulty was overcome thru
the tact of Mr. Busbee, then presiding
Mr. Smith told also of a famous debate
that took olace while he was here
Without fire and and in the biting cold
the debaters staid in the old Phi Hal
all night contesting the question.
Mr. Rodman, '78, next spoke lor a
few minutes. He paid a tribute to the
Phi, saying that whatever success in
life he had made as a lawyer was due
in nart to the training he received on
the floor of the Society hall. He bade
the present members to go out better
men, better equipped to serve tne oiaic
ami Nation. Mr. Phillips next spoue.
TTp told of the inspiration that all the
surroundings at Chapel Hill gave him.
"No institution stands higher. iNone
has done more," he said.
Younger alumni began to speak now.
After Mr. Barwick had declined to
speak because, as he said, he had al
ready done his part, Mr. Gaddy spoke.
"In the development of the South", he
said, "Carolina men have taken their
rt and are doinsr so now." Mr. Wil
son followed Mr. Gaddy. He urged
that the University be a place where
men are not educated above their fel
whut: for them.' The students in
the University and the alumni also

Undergraduaee Department. The One Hundred and Forty-fifth Session will begin September 23
1910. The course of instruction, extending over four annual sessions of eight and one-half
months each, is a carefully graded and eminently practical one, beginning with the funda
mental branches with full laboratory exercises, proceeding through a comprehensive sys
tem of clinical instruction in which ward and bedside instruction and individual work on
the part of the students form a large part, and terminating in the Fourth Year with the
assignment of students as clinical clerks in the Hospital. A large proportion (more than
80 per cent.) of the graduating classes secure positions as internes in hospitals.
Entrance requirements embrace a minimum of two years of college work, including two lan
guages other than English (French or German must be one of these) and at least cna year
of study with appropriate laboratory work in Fhysics, General Biology or Zoology and
General and Inorganic Chemistry (including Qualitative Analysis). .. , .;
