THE TARHEEL Sportograms Basketball seems to be coming into its own; each afternoon sees a bunch practicing- on the court. That is as it should be. We are due another spasm of foot ball; the two all-class teams are eager to hook up with each other; the sec ond stringers have an idea they can come mig-hty near licking- that first team; the first-choices are willing- to prove they can't and there, you are. Tney'll probably mix up on Thursday afternoon. It should be a choice scrap any way you take it; there's really mighty little difference between the two bunches; practice for the first three days of the week will put them on edg-e for the best class game of the season. . ' Furthermore, just for the fun of the thing-, we'll have three football experts on the lines for the special purpose of picking- an all-class team. The leading' teams of the cotton South are ranked as follows : Vanderbilt Auburn Mississippi Sewanee Georgia Clemson Alabama Tennessee , Grantland Rice's all Southern team, picked from the S. i. A. A.': Center Eaton (Auburn) Right guard Metzger (Vandy) Left guard Kennebrew (Miss.) Right tackle Freeland (Vandy) Left tackle Patterson (Geo. Tech) Right end Gillem (Sewanee) Left end Neeley (Vandy) Right half Morrison (Vandy) Left half McWhorther (Georgia) . Quarter Browne (Sewanee) Full back Street (Auburn) This looks like a wonderful team. Gillem, by the way, in his List- f"ur games, out of fourteen attempts ..t field goals kicked nine; six irom with out the 40 yard line. We would like to see this outfit bucli against Stewart's all Sout'' Atlantic; there woul.l be one hot old time ! Subs for all-class game: First team Hemphill '12, JIacknev '11, Alrison '11. Second team Long '14, Manning '13, Moore '12. that newspaper men generally learned to know liim and love him. Lowlow was an educated man; attended the University of North Carolina; was brilliant and entertaining always. He told us the last time we saw him, a couple of years ago, that he had re eived as high as $250 a week doing stunts in Madison Square Garden dur ing the winter season; but that clowns now-a-days were mere hired men, cheap skates who worked lor a few dollars a week. Lowlow always made local hits that the town remembered and quoted for weeks and even years after the circus was gone." Last Saturday afternoon at a meet ing of the football team, Hedley Mc Neer Bowen, of Bramwell, W. Va., was elected captain of the University foot ball team for the season of 1911. This is his fourth year in the University and his fonrth year as end on the foot ball team. Captain Bowen was elected to this position last year, but resigned because he thought he would be unable to play this year. Captain Bowen, besides playing a strong game at end, is probably the best and most consistent punter in the South. He is quick to take his ad vantage of every weakness of his op ponents, and he punts high and long to enable the men to get the runner in his tracks. He gets the ball off quick and few of his kicks have been blocked. College Topics.
