4 THE TAR HEEL Sportograras . Scientific Society Meets Continued from first page. Basketball work has started off in nice style; the apparatus has been placed in the gymnasium and there has been night practice this week. Things are getting in good shape and there will be strenuous work after the holidays. We'll get out an all State first eleven in the second January issue. , We would have done this earlier but we are having trouble getting the neces sary dope. The Harvard all star team, which trimmed Carlisle this fall, will be seen in action m the cotton South Christ mas week. They will meet picked Southern teams at Memphis, Nash ville and New Orleans. The Harvard bunch will line up something like this: Six Rods Houston, Harvard: Au- chincloss, , Yale. Tackles Fish, Harvard; Crum pecker, Michigan. Guards Hoar, Harvard; Parks, Yale. Center Cass, Princeton. Quarter Gardner, Harvard. Halves Pfeiffer, Princeton. , Full White, Harvard. Besides, there will be a string of subs just as good. The aggregation certainly looks like a money getter. However, with Yost and McGugin on the coaching job, that Nashville team is going to give the Harvard gents one hot old time and don't you for get it! Camp's all American is, as usual, partial toward the East. V The West got three men; they should have had five. Magidson, of Michigan, deserv ed a halfback position; McGovern, of Minnesota, we'll bet our footwear, is a better air around quarter than Sprackling, of Brown. . Do the colleges stick to the scholar ship rule in athletics? Are all the players on the football and baseball terns bona fide students in good stand ing? That's what they try to make us believe. Of course it is understood that in the olden days certain burly gridiron experts were hired by the season for the glory of alma mater; but the ever watchful eye of the moderator is sup posed to do away with anything like that in present day football. There fore listen to a little conversation. In the early morning hours. of yesterday, the principal speaker being a member of one of the big Eastern college teams and generally chosen by the ex perts for the "all-American" team in his position: "When are you going back to college?"- "Some time next fall," replied the college" star. "Let me whisper a secret. I'm in college for what it brings me in salary for playing foot ball." - "Oh, sure. Bnll Durham and as tronomy," he said. "So-and-so has packed you for the all-American eleven," was next ventured.'" "Why shouldn't he? He pays me," came the ready answer. No wonder Princeton doesn't win championships. They say a player not regularly enrolled and up in his studies at old Nassau can't break into an athletic game there with an ax. New York American. If the writer had named the player it would have been more to the point. We have a punch, however, that this stuff will apply to Harvard, Yale, Pennsylvania and Virginia. So long, brethren, until 1911. every year. One advantage of this simple plan is that practically no holi days would fall on Sunday. The in ternational societies have taken the matter up, and it is hoped the change will be made. After some interested discussion of Professor Patterson's paper the society adjourned. Answer Immediately. All those who have contributions for the "Barnett Fund" and have not been reached by our representatives or by letter, are requested to answer im mediately.
