In many localities the drug is chewed much as we chew tobacco, except that the juices are swallowed. The interesting point was brought out in the discussion of Professor Howell's paper that morphine is a substance which cannot be made syn theticallyby building it up in the laboratory. The opium seed-ball must be bruised by slashing it ; criss-cross-wise, when a juice gradually exudes, from which, after it has dried into a powder, the drug may be extracted. All other alkaloids can be made in the laboratory. The problem in the laboratory manufacture of morphine is simply to make the elements Car bon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen properly combine together. A. G.
