CAROLINA LOSES AT GREENSBORO
AND
WINS AT CHARLOTTE
Witmer Wins Over Disls in First. Lee Hurls Victory Against Rixey in
Second. Two Great Exhibitions.
Virginia took the Greensboro game
by a 3-1 score. Our bat wielders
couldn't find Witmer. That's all there
was to it.
It was the most entertaining- game
that has been pulled off in the Gate
City'in many moons. The weather
was bad but that didn't prevent fast
play. Duls, Edwards and Calmes
pulled of a double play in the 4th
that would have done credit to Plank,
Baker and Davis. ? Witherington and
Finlay each pulled down a foul from
under the shadow of the grandstand.
Douglas did great work around short.
The Virginians sored their first run
in the 5th. With two down Driver
hit to center for three cushions. Wit
mer counted him with a double to left.
They put twc more around in the 9th,
An infield hit and an error put two
on" and Blakeney brought them in
with a two bagger.
We got our lone tally in the 9th.
"Bull" Hasty hit a mountain climber
to Hume which that gentleman was
kind enough to drop. "Bull" reached
third. Lindsay hit a long one to
Hume and "Bull" beat the throw to
the plate Driver ended the struggle
by robbing Faison Witherington of a
hit.

The Charlotte Game.
Monday we evened up with Virginia
in grand style. We handed them nine
lonesome goose eggs while we man
aged to get one run across the pan our-
selves.
The. weather was fine and the con
test was an even better game than
Saturday's great exhibition. Our
bunch spurred on by Coach went in to
win. The Virginians went in with
the same laudable intention and there
resulted one of the real great games
of Virginia-Carolina athletic annals.
niu t oa, Rivpv did sunerb work
jn the firing pit, with Lee showing up
a shade the better. In fact, the long
Eastern Carolinian twirled one of the
greatest games that a Chapel Hill
moundman has ever twirled against
Virginia. It brings to mind Vedder
Sitton's great victory in 1905, "Phife"
Fulenwider's2-lcopin 1908 and "Red"
Stewart's 3-0 win last spring. Lee
allowed three hits and caused twelve
men to slash the ozone.
"Castoria" Pember was theCfielding
star of the day. In the 3rd Rixey sin
gled and went to second while Edwards
was throwing out" Neff at' first. Car
ter slammed a fast one to short and
when Rixey passed in front of it, "Cab''
Lindsay got tangled up and the sphere
rolled to left field. Pember snatched
it up and shot it to the plate getting
kixey by a hair's breadth. Rixey : got
an infield hit in the 5th. Neff met one
squarely and drove it to left center. It
looked rood for three bases. Pember
made a brilliant sprint, bagged the
sphere when it was within six inches
of the ground, ' and tumbled over a
couple of times without losing it,
There was otherr;"field work worthy!
of notice. Douglas put up ; another
good game at short. Neff made a nice
catch of Pember's long fly'in the 5th.
Witherington caught his best game
of the year, so far. Calmes and Carter
did snappy work around the , first
station.
We won the fracas in the 3d.
Witherington, firsfman up, 'received
free transportation and' swiped the
keystone while Lee was.striking out.
Pember couldn't locate Rixey and was
retired to the bench. This . madetwo
down. "Burr" Edwards let;'four bad
ones shootby to Finlayand ambled
to first.: Jimmy Calmes sauntered up
with his trusty stick. Faison With
erington tooka long lead1 off second.
Cal picked oubone tof his liking and
slammed a' cannon shot drive to the
left of Driver. That gent tried to
flag it but the sphere was traveling
too fast to holcPandrolled several feet
away. Meanwhile Witherington as
making a break for home and he beat
the .throw to the rubber by a safe
margin. Ed wards :;landed on third
andfcCalmes on second but there was
no further scoringfas' f'Bull" Hasty
popped to Blakeney. Things looked
good for another scores in the 8th.
Pember, first up, beat vout an infield
hit but was'out tryingto reach : third
on Edward's out. He sprained his
ankleon this "play and Thad Page
covered the left" garden during the
last session.
Rixey was the only Virginian to
pass the half way station. However
in the ninth i Virginia had an excelt
lent look in. Lile first up was safe on
Edward's badi throw and went to sec
ond on a passed ball. Lindsay caught
Hume's pop. Blakeney drove a long
one to left which Thad Page hung on
to. There were two down. Finaly
was hit and trotted to first. Things
looked stormy. ' A hit meant but
Driver lammed the horsehide to Ed
wards. "Burr" handled it perfectly,
said, "So long Mary," shot it to Jimmy

BAPTISTS IN FAST GAME
Duls in Great Form. But Twenty-Eight Face
Him. ,
We white-washed the Anti-Bonders
yesterday by a 2-0 score. The game
was fast'lvwith but little hitting on
either side.
' Both twirlers did nifty work. We
got but three safeties off Smith, while
Duls held Crozier's pets to two. But
twenty-eight men faced Ferd Duls
if'out reached first. Ferd caught one
of them napping off first and another
off second. Witherington' caught an
other off first. The fourth man ex
pired on second. .
We got the two runs of the game in
the 3rd round. With none out, Duls and
Page were hit. Hasty sacrificed and
Jimmy Calmes counted them with a
two-sacker to left.
Our inner garden did its usual high
grade ' work. "Cab":;' Lindsay ac
cepted six chances in fine style. Cor
rell, the visitors' right fielder, made a
great catch of Lindsay's line drive in
the 3rd. :

Better Than Ever. Novel Features Introduced.
An Attractive Publication
The past two volumes of the Yack
ety Yack have been remarkable for
the beauty of their make-up and the
excellence of their contents. The pre
sent volume is equal in every" respect
to this high standard, indeed, the
judgement of its readers will doubt
less be that it surpasses any that has
ever been published at the University.
The book is bound in stiff, dark blue
leatherthat gives it a stable, lasting
appearance. The seal of the Univer
sity and a view of the well, , South,
Old East and Old West Buildings is
stamped on the front cover.
The Yackety Yack is dedicated to
the late Dr. Eben Alexander. The
dedication article is written by Presi
dent Venable. It is a simple, touch
ing appreciation of the man the
teacher, and the friend. Thereis- al-
so a short article on Dr. Alexander
by the present head of the Greek De
partment.
The cartoon which leads off the
faculty roll will ticke everybody. It's
certainly grand. The class rolls which
follow are better than ever before.
The senior pictures are all good and
the writeups of the members of the
class are apt and pithy. . But their
cartoons take the eye. The eccentri
cities and peculiarities of 1911 have
been relentlessly and strikingly pic
tured in all their . glory. Not
even have the hobbles and harems of
the co-eds have been spared. Verily
tis ridiculous to look upon.
The book contains an excel
lent article by R. D. W. Connor on
"The University of North Carolina in
the Civil War." The literary societies,
debaters, fraternities, and other clubs
and organizations have their usual
space. The pictures of these organiza
tions are all good. Thirty pages are
given to pictures of athletic teams
and articles and records concerning
them. The "wit "and humor- of ' the
book is, we are glad to say, above the
average. The editors have 'had the
good taste to cut out most of the
usual tommyrot. There are many
good cartoons and good jokes how
ever. The Tar Heel supplement is
full of breezy articles.
When all is said the all-round ex
cellence of the book can be but little
shown. A good hour spent 'looking
through it is needed to find out what
it is worth. The2books are ready for
shipment and delivery. But they
will not be delivered until the organi
zations in college which have graci
ously allowed their pictures to adorn
the pages of the annual pay their dues.
The books will be delivered just as
soon as these dues are paid.
