THE TAR HEEL Useful Information FoiMhe bcnelit ol helpless stu dents; old and young-, the Tar Heel will from now on', run oc casionally a column containing useful hints n f'e solution ol' he many perplexing- problems facing; student life. The column will bo in the nature of those appearing in other up-to-date papers; for instance, those on "The Home Beautilul", "Eve Up To. Date", "Hints for the Busy Housewife", "The Ideas of a Plain Country Woman"; and "How to Dress on Two Hundred a Year". It will come out only when we feel like it. The first article appears below: There are in the University many students whose excessive amount of : work prevents them from taking- the proper care of their physics 1 selves. Realizing the need of regular, vig-orous healthful exercise among- these students especially, and among- all classes, shades, sizes, and colors of j, students, allow us to stiyyest a healthful, sternuous form of exercise, and a fascina ting- sport chewing- g-utn. The Physical. Direrlor tells us that this form of exercise, if syste matioallv carried out, is one of the muscle and jaw develop ers ku.i xn to the profession! Part of its attractiveness lies in its in expensiveness postively no shin g-uards,' head gear, or pads are necessary, althoug-h mufflers for the spectators are sometimes de sirable. If the reg-ular official wad of g-um is not attainable, or if you wish toeconomize, a cheap substitute may be found by using a strip of ordinary horsehide. Old overshoes, mixed with a lit tle putty, talcum powder, flavor ing-extract, haV-been found to be, excellent and appetizing- jaw trainers. The rules of the game are simple just place g-um in the mouth and move same in the tnannr of an after-dinner cow. With a little practice you will find that quite a deal or speed and a I certain snap may be acquired. Care should be taken to choose the most suitable place for taking this valuable exercise. One safe rule is to select any public place. Chapel; church, class room, on the side lines, in the drug store, and at Piekwick have been found to bo desirable places. Other places, such' as when leaning over some one else's shoulder reading his paper, or when in your room, with your roommate trying to study; also afford splendid oppor tunities for exercise as well as for a display of skill on the part of the chewer. A resounding pop of the gum, if carefully timed and skillfully executed, will be sure to attract the attention of envious admirers. One think you must be warned against: Be sure to iprovide a place for keeping the gum when at rest. It has been found by careful experiment that chewing gum will not lose its flavor 'when placed upon the bed post at night. Door facings are also excellent abiding places. But this Important matter must of course in the long run be left to the convenience and individual judgment of each chewer. , Roy L. This put new spirit into the Red and Blark team, and they kept the play in Carolina's territory for the remainder of the game, sever al times getting dangerously near our goal line, but never succeed ing in scoring.
